Take a Look at Friends & Servants

Enjoy this Rainier Country video of the YMCA's Friends and Servants program.  This program would likely come to Sumner if Orton Junction can happen.  The City of Sumner is working on the appeal now.

Sumner Receives Trail Award

Ted Hill, Sumner's Associate City Engineer, accepts a great honor for Sumner from Mount Rainier National Park Superintendent Randy King.
Yesterday, the ForeverGreen Council honored the City of Sumner for the city's trail-building efforts, including the current construction of a pedestrian bridge over the White River that will eventually help connect the Interurban Trail from Seattle to the Foothills Trail to Mt. Rainier.

In presenting the award, David Seago, ForeverGreen Council's president, said the following:

With 9,000 residents, Sumner is not one of the big boys among local municipalities.  But Sumner's leaders have shown outsized commitment to building trails as a key part of community infrastructure.  Sumner scored a big win last year by winning a big state grant and matching that with city and private money to fund $2.2 million worth of trail construction.  Work on two trail segments is now underway and should be completed next month. One part we're particularly excited about is a new trail bridge being built across the White River near Stewart Road in North Sumner.

Let me quote a Sumner city spokeswoman I talked to this morning. She really captures the city's enthusiasm for trails.

"After these two sections of trail are completed, we only have three more sections of trail that the city needs to finish and three sections that private developers need to finish to complete the major arterial trail through Sumner. 'Sections' shouldn't make people think about large gaps -- these remaining sections are relatively small. The point is we're so close to having a finished trail system, which is important not only for Sumner but also the entire region. Sumner's trail will connect over 30 miles of other trails, including the Foothills Trail and the Interurban Trail, helping people come all the way from Seattle to Mount Rainier on a continuous trail system. We also connect with other trails, such as Puyallup's River Walk Trail out to Tacoma and to the Lakeland Hills Trails."
