Memorial Day

Placing of Flags: Thursday, May 24

Ceremony: Monday, May 28 at 10 am

Sumner City Cemetery

A very special annual tradition returns for Memorial Day.  Volunteers are asked to help place flags for veterans at our Sumner City Cemetery on Thursday, May 24.  Then, join the City of Sumner for a Memorial Day Celebration on Monday, May 28 at 10 am.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day officially began as Decoration Day, three years after the Civil War ended in 1868. They think that May 30 was chosen because flowers would be blooming and available across the country.  Over time, Decoration Day became Memorial Day to remember all who have died in service to our country.
