Celebrate the 4th safely!

Please follow the laws for a safe and celebratory 4th of July weekend:

  • Fireworks may be discharged only on July 4 from noon to midnight.
  • Fireworks may be sold June 28 at noon through July 4 at 9 pm.  Stand applications have already been submitted.
  • No one under the age of 16 years may possess or discharge any fireworks unless directly supervised by a responsible adult.
  • Discharge of fireworks is not allowed on City property including parks and parking lots.
  • Discharge of fireworks on someone else's property without the owner's permission is not allowed.
  •  Discharge only legal fireworks.  Full listings are available through East Pierce Fire & Rescue  or through Washington State Patrol.
  • Always have a water bucket present, never relight "duds," and never alter fireworks.

Violation of these laws is a Class 2 civil infraction, and violators may be fined up to $257.00 for each violation.  Worse than fines, however, is the good chance of damage to property, burns and even life-threatening injuries associated with fireworks.  Few people really understand the risk until tragedy happens to them.  Don't add your family and friends to the statistics.

Music Off Main returns with favorites

This Friday, July 1, the Sumner Arts Commission begins the 2011 season of the Music Off Main.  All concerts are free of charge and begin at 6:30 pm.  The first concert on July 1 is held at Rainer View Park, at the corner of Meade McCumber and Parker Roads.  All other concerts are held at Heritage Park in Downtown Sumner.

In a different twist from previous seasons, instead of new artists, this year features returning favorites from past seasons.  All concerts bring out a mix of audience members with senior citizens clapping to the music while young children enjoy the sidewalk chalk that the Arts Commission makes available.

This year, food is also an option right at the concerts with Dixie's Home Cookin' offering old-fashioned Americana fare for dinner (hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries) and, of course, Sumner's famous rhubarb pie and ice cream.

At Rainier View Park, 6:30 pm

July 1: Puyallup Valley Community Band

The Puyallup Valley Community Band starts off the 4th of July weekend right with Big Band classics, favorite marches and more.

At Heritage Park, 6:30 pm

July 8: Danny Vernon

This Elvis favorite performs all three decades of Elvis' career.  From the pink Cadillac days to the jumpsuit Vegas era, Vernon brings all the magic and fun of Elvis to Sumner-including scarves, teddy bears and the beautiful music of The King.

July 15: Funaddicts

A favorite of Music Off Main's 2010 season, the Funaddicts musical talent covers sixty years of hits from jazz to classic rock, contemporary to golden oldies, country to Disco.  This band had lots of people dancing from Glen Miller to Lady Ga-Ga.

July 22: Maia Santell & House Blend

The band consists of vocals, guitar, saxophone, bass and drums while Santell's vocal style is consistently swingin' and soulful.  The group performs jazz, blues, swing, big band, jump blues and rhythm and blues.

July 29: The Diamond Experience

In the 2009 season, when Billy Farmer began singing "Cracklin' Rose," "Sweet Caroline" and other Neil Diamond favorites, the crowd in Heritage Park instantly started clapping and dancing.  It was truly a sparkling Diamond Experience.  The group returns for another night offering tribute to Neil Diamond.
