Shape Future of Sumner's Sounder Station
Sounder

On January 19, 4-7 pm, Sound Transit will host an open house in the Sumner High School Commons to present information on the Sounder Station Access Planning Study. The agency is conducting the study to identify potential improvements in the ways commuters access its Sounder stations.

Possible improvements the agency is studying include increased parking, pedestrian sidewalks, crosswalks and bridges, bicycle commute options, and transit facility enhancements.

 Open houses will include:

  • A description of Sound Transit service areas, transit routes, 2011 budget, and the Sound Transit 2 program
  • Objectives of and timeline for the Sounder Station Access Planning Study
  • Overview of existing station access issues and discussion of potential solutions
  • Informal Q & A and public comment

The Station Access Study is part of the ST2 regional transit funding package that voters approved in November 2008. The study is planned through 2011.

Fisher's Story at Metro Animal Control

This boy came to the shelter in terrible condition.  He was sullen and depressed, and no one came looking for him.  Something about him, though, caught the attention of animal control officers.  Although not spry and interested, he was extremely polite and under all that grime appeared to be a fairly young dog.  They contacted a local grooming business, who offered to bathe him and give him a haircut to help him find a new Forever Family.  It took all of two hours when an employee of the groomers called the shelter to ask what it would take to adopt him!  She said she was in love and would be excited to offer him a place to call his own.  She completed the paperwork when she brought him back to show how well he cleaned up.  His new name is "Fisher," and he is with his new Forever Family!

There are lots of great dogs and cats like Fisher whom Metro Animal Services wants to connect with their own Forever Families. Could that be you? Take a look at who's waiting right now.

Sumner Trivia Answer
The last issue of the paper Community Connections asked the following trivia question: "how old is Sumner's designation as the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World?"

As promised, here's the answer: we're not entirely sure.  When that designation began and by whom remains a mystery.  However, there is more!  The City recently found a archived story in the Berkeley Daily Gazette from 1946.  The story talks about how the Sumner Rhubarb Growers Association in Washington chose Ann Folger, a student at the University of California and member of the family famous for coffee, as "Miss Rhubarb Queen 1946."  The article quotes the "gentlemen of Sumner" as having said that Sumner is "the rhubarb capital of the world with a yearly business of over a million dollars."  It's still a mystery when the "pie" got added to the designation, but now there's one more piece of the missing Sumner heritage puzzle in place.

Take a look online at rhubarb recipes from the original rhubarb cookbook (cover shown here) that Ann Folger was holding in her 1946 picture as "Miss Rhubarb Queen." Go to www.rhubarbpiecapital.com and click Baking.
