| Looking at the future of communicating |
It's easier than ever to keep up with your local government with the Web and e-mail offering new options, including this newsletter. Even more new frontiers are opening up with things like Twitter and Facebook.
How do we as a City best use these new methods to keep you updated? Do you want news about City budget amendments showing up along with your Aunt Edna telling you what she made for dinner last night? If we shut down a road for flooding, where do you look to find the latest information: on the Web, on Twitter, on e-mail or....? We're going to be exploring a lot of these questions in 2010.
You can also check out some of the newer options already available on our website including:
Report problems such as street lights out, potholes, etc. straight to our Public Works Shops.
Watch past Council meetings on streaming video.
Check out past Council meeting minutes, agenda packets, ordinances and resolutions in a searchable database.
Report non-emergency incidents to the Police.
Check public notices.
We'll never have the resources to replace major news outlets as your first source of information for news going on around us, but with some careful planning, we may be able to make it easy to bring City news to you in the places you already go for information. |

| Cologne...Shanghai...Sumner? |
In the paper Community Connections, we asked the following question: how does Sumner have a direct impact on a new subway in Cologne, traffic tunnels in Shanghai and the proposed tunnel to replace the Seattle viaduct?
ANSWER: A company called Herrenknecht builds high-tech tunnel boring machines, including the ones listed above. A German company, they employ more than 2,000 people world-wide, and their American office is here in Sumner!

| Dear John... |
After 18 years of working for the City of Sumner, City Administrator John Doan is leaving to take on new challenges at the City of Tumwater. Mayor Enslow will select a new city administrator with support from the City Council and City employees.
As Mayor Enslow says, of all John's accomplishments, the most important thing he's done is bring together many people to be part of this community. To help send him off with our gratitude for his service, we're collecting Dear John letters. If you would like us to include one from you, please send yours to Communications Director Carmen Palmer, City of Sumner, 1104 Maple Street, Suite 200, Sumner, WA 93890. Or you can e-mail your message to carmenp@ci.sumner.wa.us. |
| Got Sumner Art? |
Can you name 10 pieces of public art located throughout Sumner? If not, it's time to take a walk and explore your city. The Sumner Arts Commission just finished the Sumner Art Walking Tour brochure to help you take a second look at the beauty in your own city.
Thank you to the Sumner Arts Commission, especially Commissioner Judy Caviezel, for their work on this. |
| Judge Jenkins gets sworn in |
This past December, the State of Washington's Supreme Court conducted a formal swearing-in of Municipal Court Judges in the state. Sumner's Judge Timothy Jenkins was included.
Mayor Enslow appointed Judge Jenkins in August 2008 to conclude the balance of the previous four-year term when Judge Shelton went full time in Puyallup.
Judge Jenkins was appointed to serve as Municipal Court Judge in Sumner for the next four-year term.
Congratulations, Judge Jenkins! (Shown, center, with Retiring Chief Justice Gerry Alexander and incoming Chief Justice Barbara Madsen.)
