How Howard Hanson Dam Does Not Affect Sumner

You may have heard a lot of information in the news about the Howard Hanson Dam on the Green River.  Does this affect Sumner?  No, there are no direct impacts of the Howard Hanson Dam or Green River on Sumner.  If the Green River floods, the only impact Sumner residents would likely experience would be reduced transportation options when traveling north of Sumner.

The Situation with Howard Hanson
The Howard Hanson Dam reservoir has been lowered and will not have the normal water storage capacity this winter. Harold Smelt of Pierce County said a large winter storm might cause flooding in the Green River in King County but should not cause any damage in Pierce County. There is no cross-connection threat from the Green River to the White River that flows through Sumner.

Being Prepared Is Always the Best Option

While the Green River and any flood on it does not directly affect Sumner, all the work that you're hearing to prepare communities along that river is a good reminder of how everyone can prepare for any emergency.  A lot of work and plans is underway to reduce the potential of floods from Sumner's own two rivers, but sometimes Mother Nature fails to follow any plans made.  It's always a good idea to think about how you can be prepared should an emergency situation--whether a major storm or earthquake or flood--occurs.
