New Businesses Come to Sumner

 Coffee
They say that things come in threes, and that's been the case lately with economic news in Sumner, especially when that news involves business!

This week, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR) announced that it chose Sumner for a new manufacturing and distribution facility for its Specialty Coffee Business Unit.  This unit produces coffee, tea and hot cocoa from GMCR's family of brands, including Tully's CoffeeŽ, Green Mountain CoffeeŽ and Newman's OwnŽ Organics coffee.

For Sumner, this means new, quality jobs right here in town.  In addition, it brings another good company to Sumner, a company that joins such Sumner companies as REI, Dillanos and Pacific Crest Industries in valuing community.

GMCR's announcement comes on the heels of two new retailers opening in Sumner: Jay Lee's Honda of Sumner and Mud Bay, which sells high-end pet products.  Both GMCR and Mud Bay talked specifically about wanting to be part of Sumner's community-oriented atmosphere.  Jay Lee and his team already participated in Sumner's Golf for Life tournament.

Why is all of this so important to Sumner?  The biggest threats to small towns is that they either die out or get swallowed up by sprawl.  These three businesses have shown that not only is Sumner staying economically healthy, but it's doing so by being true to its nature.  Sumner doesn't have to try to be Seattle or Tacoma: in fact, it's the difference from larger cities that is making Sumner attractive in tough financial times.

So, sit back with a cup of coffee, toss the dog a treat, and maybe dream about a new car.  Sumner appears to be defying tough times by bringing in new partners that will make sure it remains a charming small town for years to come.

Sumner Police Warn Against Crimes of Opportunity
Open window
Summertime is great--everyone is outside, enjoying the warm weather and sunshine.  Unfortunately, it means that people are leaving doors and windows open in homes, apartments, businesses and vehicles.  Along with other communities, Sumner has seen an increase in crimes of opportunity.  These are crimes that don't necessarily involve breaking of windows or locks but are crimes where someone sees an open door, window or garage and helps themselves to a bike, a purse, a computer or other easily carried items.  These are the most common crimes, and they are the easiest to avoid.

Even though it is warm, make sure you secure doors and windows that are unattended.  There are tools you can purchase that allow you to leave your house windows cracked but locked.  If you'd like to have an officer stop by to look at your home or business and give you security suggestions, let Sumner Police know by calling 253-863-6384.
Stewart Road to Grow Wider
Stewart Road
You may have noticed work this summer on Stewart Road (also known as 8th Street).  This is preparing to widen the section of road from the river to the Lake Tapps Parkway.  Once complete, this section will have two lanes in each direction plus a center turn lane, sidewalks and a trail.  Construction is expected to last through next summer.  At every point in the project, the road should remain open and accessible although delays are likely when construction forces a lane closed.  This project is a partnership between the City of Sumner and Pierce County and is funded through grants from the Transportation Improvement Board.
Partners Raise over $7800
Denny's team at Golf Tourney
Thank you to everyone who participated in the City's Golf for Life Tournament in July.  By golfing, putting, eating dessert and bidding on items, you helped raise over $7800 for the City's Relay for Life team.  We couldn't have done it without you!
