| Major Street Improvements Close to Funded |
|
Last week, Sumner made a giant leap toward getting the funding to redo the Traffic/Fryar/Main intersection and to also resurface the East Valley Highway. The Pierce County Regional Council (PCRC) approved the Transportation Coordinating Committee's recommendations for funding. Now, this list will go to the Puget Sound Regional Council for approval.
For Traffic/Fryar/Main, PCRC recommended $2,188,593, which is in addition to the $886,624 federal funds we already had. Out of the fifteen projects recommended, this was the second highest amount of money awarded.
This project will reconfigure the intersection, removing the fifth leg for West Main to speed up the light cycle, add sidewalks and bike lanes, and realign the lanes a little better.
In addition, we were also awarded $130,000 for the East Valley Highway Resurfacing. This will pay to complete the design and environmental phases of the project, and this project remains high on the contingency list for further funding if more becomes available. Mayor Dave Enslow sends a big thank you to everyone who made this happen. There's not only our staff and Council but also our great partners. The Port of Tacoma wrote a wonderful letter of support to get Traffic & Main funded and for East Valley, we had letters from the City of Auburn and Peterson Brothers.
Sumner will work hard to make sure the Puget Sound Regional Council approves this list. Funding wouldn't come through until late this fall, so construction work on Traffic & Main couldn't begin until next spring. |

| City Takes Furlough Days for Budget Savings |
It isn't news that the economy continues to struggle. However, it does continue to impact the City of Sumner's budget, with revenue consistently coming in lower than our most conservative forecasts. As part of a series of steps to curb expenses to match, the employees of Sumner and a majority of the City Council are taking unpaid furlough days.
On these days, city employees take a day off without pay and city facilites close (except required services such as police and the wastewater treatment facility). The estimated savings is $20,000 per day. Three of the City's unions have agreed to participate and members of the Police Guild are participating on an individual basis.
The first of these days off is July 6. There will be no Council Meeting, and City Hall, the Senior Center, and the Cemetery will be closed. (This is in addition to the regularly scheduled observance of Independence Day on July 3.)
If you need police assistance on this day, please ring the buzzer as you would after-hours or if it is an emergency, as always, call 911. The other three furlough days will be September 4, October 12 and December 31. |
