City Helps Fill in Sidewalks

SidewalksSumner is a very walkable city, and nearly since the city's incorporation, it's had the goal of a full sidewalk system.  But, over time, gaps have remained throughout the city.

Once again, the City and property owners are joining forces to fill in missing sidewalks and, starting this year, also fix damaged sidewalks.  Property owners can apply by May 22 to have their property considered.  If their property fits the program, the City will pay for half of their sidewalk and do all the construction work this summer.  If you're interested, click here for more information.
Remembering Our Veterans
Memorial Day Flags
Did you know that Sumner City Cemetery is the resting place of U.S. Veterans who have fought for our country all the way back to the Civil War?  Perhaps that's why Memorial Day is a very important celebration at our cemetery.  Since 1943, Sumner's VFW Post 3070 has been placing flags at the markers of veterans.  They will return to continue this tradition on Thursday, May 21. The Cemetery's Memorial Day Service wil be held on Monday, May 25 at 10 am.  You we are welcome to join us for one or both of these events.

Mayor Enslow, Coffee and a YMCA?
Coffee MugSaturday, May 30
Come to City Hall to hear about the latest and greatest and voice your own thoughts or questions. First, starting at 9:30 am, Mayor Dave Enslow will be on hand to answer your questions, hear your thoughts, and chat informally with no set agenda.  Then, at 10:30 am, you can hear an update on the possibility of Sumner getting a YMCA.  We'll be joined by Bob Ecklund, President & CEO of Pierce Co. YMCA, and Michelle LaRue, also with the YMCA.
Beginning Those Summer Plans

Music Off MainIt's not too early to start planning for the summer.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

* The first ever Sumner Meadows Art & Garden Show is June 13 at the Sumner Meadows Golf Links.  Get garden tips and find unique pieces of art to buy for gifts or yourself.  Proceeds benefit the Sumner Family Center.  More information

* The new 2009 Music Off Main schedule is out.  Fill your Friday nights in July with a variety of musical adventures. Check the schedule.

* Hit a hole in one against cancer at Golf for Life.  This inaugural golf tournament raises money for the City's Relay for Life team and provides a great chance to enjoy golf and dinner or even just dinner (from Branks BBQ) at Sumner Meadows.  Find out more about registration and sponsorship opportunities.
