Is Sumner banning truck parking?

The short answer is NO!

Now, here's the long answer. The City is currently reviewing its zoning and planning to figure out where truck parking is best suited so that it works for all involved: neighbors, residents, business, industry and truck drivers.  In order to do this well, there is a six-month moritorium (a fancy word for "time-out") on the creation of new truck parking so that the Council and staff have time to really look at this issue from all sides and make good choices.

We've been hearing from some businesses and truck drivers, but please let us know what you think and be part of this process.  A public hearing on this will be held at the May 18 City Council meeting, starting at 7 pm at City Hall.  You'll see the public hearing notice already on the website, giving you more information on how to comment.  Link to City's Online Calendar

Designating a Manufacturing/Industrial Center a Possibility

The May 18 Council Meeting is a busy one for industrial issues.  Sumner is in the process of determining whether or not to officially designate the 24th Street Interchange as a Manufacturing/Industrial Center.  This designation would help us get funding to keep up the infrastructure that supports this area.

At the May 18 Council Meeting, there will be a public hearing, giving you the opportunity to add your input.

Congratulations to Golden State

In a nice article that appeared in The News Tribune and The Olympian, Jeff Steiner talked about Golden State Foods' distribution facility here in Sumner.  The Sumner center won the 2008 Silliker Audit Platinum Award for Commitment to Food Safety.  That means Sumner's site was one of the 10 best out of 3,500 manufacturers and distributors.  Congratulations to everyone at Golden State Foods!

Bus Service Continues to Be in Jeopardy
409 Bus
Nope, there's still not many riders on the trial run of the 409 Pierce Transit bus serving the North End.  We received one comment from the last issue that the times just don't fit for one individual's schedule, but that was it.

Pierce Transit is working with us to bring a transit fair to the industrial area to give your employees an idea of what it's like to ride the bus and answer their questions.  Watch for the time and place, and in the meantime, let us know if you want to set up your own information session at your site or just need transit questions answered: Send e-mail
