What does Sumner's dreding resolution mean?

On April 6, the Sumner City Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of flood protection measures, including dredging.

This resolution shows Sumner's official support for a variety of flood protection measures, including dredging.  When the state, county, tribes and Federal governments all look at our rivers, they know exactly where the City of Sumner stands.  Plus, the passing of the resolution itself got Sumner and its flooding challenges in the media, which is always good to help get our issue in front of those officials who have control over the rivers!

The resolution does not mean that dredging will begin on the river.  It is not within the City's power to make that decision or go out and start dredging.  A number of federal agencies, including the National Marine Fisheries Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Army Corps of Engineers, hold that authority with other input coming from the State of Washington, Pierce County, tribes, and other river stakeholders.

What happens next
Mayor Enslow sent the resolution to our state and federal representatives.  He also sent it to our neighboring cities and other cities in Western Washington along rivers, inviting them to pass similar resolutions to give a greater impact on the county, state, and federal levels.
No final word yet on CDBG

We haven't heard yet on the status of our Community Development Block Grant.  Stay tuned, and thank you to anyone who attended their public meeting to support Sumner's funding request for the flood wall.

FEMA funding comes to citizens

FEMA has granted funding from the January 2006 flood to help homeowners in Rainier Manor raise their homes.  Only nine homes qualified under FEMA's guidelines, and those homeowners have been contacted by the City of Sumner.

Flood safety--Did you know...
Did you know that in a flood, it takes only two feet of water to carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks?  For many people in Sumner, their house itself may not be in danger of flooding, but their only access road is.  In that situation, the City of Sumner will still recommend evacuation because we want you safe at all times, not just in your house but also in your cars.
