TOP 10 REASONS NOT TO SKIP BREAKFAST

#1

Break the fast. What does "breakfast" mean? Your body responds to not eating for hours and hours by "slowing down"; diminishing its metabolic rate and burning fewer calories to conserve energy. By eating breakfast, you wake up your metabolism and get your engine humming, burning those calories you need to burn to lose weight.

#2

Eat more, weigh less. Researchers have repeatedly shown that people who eat breakfast have a better chance of losing weight, and keeping it off. When you skip meals, you're so hungry by lunchtime you eat the entire cow! The National Weight Control Registry shows that among those who've lost 30 or more pounds and have kept it off more than a year, 90 percent report eating breakfast most days of the week.

#3

Do better at work and school. Breakfast helps wake you up. Studies show that people who eat breakfast are more alert and do better on tests than people who skip breakfast. Eating breakfast helps "improve memory and positively affects the tasks that require the retention of new information. Conversely, a hungry child can be apathetic, disinterested, and irritable when confronted with difficult tasks. Breakfast is the key." No doubt adults need breakfast as much as kids do.

#4

Breakfast is your chance to eat the foods you may not eat the rest of the day. You can't go wrong with a whole-grain cereal and berries with nonfat milk -- here is your fiber, folic acid and calcium in one easy-to-grab bowl.

#5

Skipping breakfast makes you grouchy. Studies show that people who eat breakfast tend to be in better moods. Breakfast gets you started on the right track for the day. If you start out with a healthy breakfast, then you set the mood for lunch. You're more likely to choose something reasonable for lunch if you've paid some attention to your breakfast choices.

#6

Cancel the danish or sugared doughnut first thing in the morning; they cause a blood sugar dip a couple of hours later. You'll be desperate for something to perk you up, and will be more likely to grab another high-sugar refined carb for a quick sugar rush.

#7

Breakfast makes your machine run better. Get yourself on a schedule with a healthy breakfast, and you're ready to take on the world.

#8

Set a good example for your children. By skipping breakfast, your kids will think it's not important. Breakfast doesn't have to be a big affair, but don't wimp out. Make it a habit, and your kids will be way ahead of the game, too.

#9

Don't eat dessert for breakfast. If you think a glazed doughnut or a breakfast bar with 30 grams of sugar are breakfast items, then think again. Doughnuts are fried lumps of sugared dough, and many breakfast bars should be labeled "candy bars" instead.

#10

Watch out the labels. "Nutritious," doesn't necessarily always mean healthy. Cereal manufacturers are experts in marketing, using words that send a message of health. Unless you read the labels, you eat at your own risk. Kids' cereals can have more sugar than candy. Protect your kids from getting hooked on these cereals; they'll get used to all the sugar, and will want only pre-sweetened cereals.

Revitalize Your Digestive Health with Acupuncture

More than 95 million Americans suffer from digestive disorders ranging from constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome to more serious conditions such as acid reflux (GERD), ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.  Digestive disorders may indicate overall health imbalance. Often due to chronic stress, digestive symptoms in the body can be a result of endocrine and nervous system hyperactivity. Symptoms of digestive disorders may include: Concentration difficulties, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, anemia, muscle cramps, low energy, and weight loss. It is estimated that approximately 62 million Americans experience digestive problems on a regular basis. In fact, more than 35 million physician office visits a year are due to gastrointestinal complaints.  Reports are confirming that acupuncture and Oriental medicine can offer relief from even the most complex digestive problems.

Evidence that Oriental medicine has been used for digestive disorders can be found in early medical literature dating back to 3 AD, where specific acupuncture points and herbal formulas for borborygmus (rumbling or gurgling in the intestines), abdominal pain and diarrhea with pain are discussed.

Traditional Chinese medicine utilizes acupuncture and moxibustion (burning mugwort or other medicinal herbs on selected acupuncture points) for the treatment of digestive disorders. Moxibustion acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, tonifies deficient imbalances and is effective in the treatment of many gastrointestinal conditions.

Digestive disorders indicate that there is a disharmony between the body organs responsible for digestion. This disharmony is commonly caused by lifestyle factors and diet, which put a strain on the digestive system. When prolonged over a period of many years, digestive disorder imbalances occur. Changes in these lifestyle factors and diet modification is often integrated into the acupuncture course of treatment. TCM corrects the imbalances and regulates digestion.

Specific acupuncture points increase gastrointestinal muscle contraction and relaxation and reduce gastric acid secretion, making acupuncture beneficial in treating general gastrointestinal symptoms. In conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine and stress reduction techniques, acupuncture can nourish related organs, minimize symptoms and contribute to medication-free digestive system health maintenance.

Acupuncture is effective in treating most digestive disorders including: Bacterial infections, peptic ulcers, heartburn, lactose intolerance, gastrointestinal tract bleeding, inflammatory conditions, and hiatus hernia syndrome. Acupuncture has demonstrated effectiveness in managing chemotherapy medication digestive side effects and digestive symptoms following anesthesia. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for digestive imbalance as well as a wide range of medical conditions.

Keep De-Stressed Amongst All The Chaos

It all seems to collide at once - you return from vacation, kids are preparing to go back to school and on top of it all, you need to return to work. While vacation can do wonders for your stress levels, why does it seem to shoot right back up upon your return to "the real world".

Our bodies are hardwired to help us react to stressful events.  At the first sign of a threat, whether real or perceived, our sympathetic nervous system kicks in and facilitates what is called the "fight or flight" response.  Our heart rate increases, our pupils dilate, and our digestion temporarily shuts down, directing blood to our extremities, so that if need be, we can either fight what is threatening us, or turn and run if the threat is too formidable.

Unfortunately, the "fight or flight" response, which worked well in caveman days, does not serve us as well if the "threat" is a demanding boss, nasty co-worker or even a worrisome situation that is not being resolved.  More often than not, the stress in our lives is long-term, and as a result, we find ourselves in a constant state of "fight or flight", or stress.  Over time, the constant state of stress takes its toll.  Cortisol, the body's stress hormone elevates, blood pressure increases, and our immune function is suppressed.  Over time, these symptoms become worse and can develop into anxiety, depression, fatigue, digestive problems, and tension headaches.

In Chinese medicine, stress, anxiety, depression or any strong emotion interrupts the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.  According to Chinese medical theory, energy flows through our body through a network of "roads", almost like a highway system.  Stress, anger, or any intense emotion acts like a traffic jam, blocking the free flow of energy in the body.  For example, many people who are very stressed out complain of upper back, shoulder and neck pain.  This is because stress is causing tension in those areas, blocking the free flow of energy, causing pain, tightness, and often leading to headaches.

In a highway system, when there is road construction or an accident, traffic may be also backed up on other secondary roads that feed into or out of the affected area.  This is true in the body, too.  Stress may affect many other parts of the body, most notably digestion, the ability to sleep, pain conditions, and blood pressure. Stress can also aggravate an already troublesome health condition.

Through acupuncture, theses energy blockages can be addressed. Acupuncture points serve as the on and off ramps to the energy highway, and can help energy flow smoothly, and alleviate not only the symptoms of stress and anxiety, but the stress and anxiety itself.

From a Western viewpoint, acupuncture works to alleviate stress by releasing natural pain-killing chemicals in the brain, called endorphins.  In addition, acupuncture improves circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out cortisol and other waste chemicals.  The calming nature of acupuncture also decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles.
