SUN PROOF YOUR SKIN

Here are some things to keep in mind BEFORE laying out in the sun:

 

  

 

The biggest mistakes women make when applying sunscreen? Not using enough and not reapplying. It takes 1 ounce (enough lotion to fill a shot glass) to cover your body properly. And no matter what type of sunscreen you use, you have to reapply immediately after swimming or every two hours you're outdoors.

  

A bottle of SPF won't last more than a few weeks if you're using as much as you should. If it does, toss it after a year. The formula's less effective over time and it deteriorates even faster when exposed to heat.

 

A recent study showed that people who ate a diet supplemented with flavanol-rich dark chocolate were less susceptible to the harmful, aging effects of UV light. Sweet news!

 

Gloss may act like a magnifying glass on your lips, experts say, increasing the transmission of light and upping your risk for skin cancer. So prep your lips with an SPF 30 balm or switch to lipstick-its sun-filtering abilities may help lower your cancer risk.

 

Overcast? You still need SPF! - "The sun's UV light does get through on cloudy days," according to Dr. Eberting. In fact, some types of clouds can actually increase UV intensity by reflecting and refracting sunlight. Bottom line: wear sunscreen every time you head outside.

 

Using a continuous spray instead of lotion? It takes 15 to 20 seconds of misting to dispense the 1 ounce needed to cover your body.

 

SPF made simple - SPF measures protection from UVB rays. But you need a sunscreen that also offers UVA protection (sometimes labeled "broad-spectrum protection").

 

Derms recommend using at least SPF 30, which allows only one-thirtieth of the sun's UVB rays to reach your skin (meaning you're protected against 97 percent of the UVB rays). 

 

UV light decoded: Invisible UV light is broken down into several wavelength ranges. Here's why you need both UVA and UVB protection.
 
 

  • UVA: Think of the A for "aging." This light penetrates deeper into your skin, causing cellular damage that may lead to skin cancer. It's also responsible for 80 percent of skin aging, like spots, wrinkles, and sagging.
  • UVB: Think of the B for "burning." This light causes skin to redden and can lead to skin cancer over time.

Acupuncture Treats Headaches & Migraines

  

Chronic headaches can be a debilitating condition for its sufferers. Most modern treatments are only effective at numbing the symptomatic pain of the headache. The good news is that research shows that acupuncture for headaches is effective at controlling the pain and preventing reoccurrences of headaches. Headaches are commonly classified by their symptoms into the following categories:

 

Migraine Headaches

Cluster Headaches

Sinus Headaches

Tension Headaches

TMJ Headaches

 

  

What Causes Headaches?

In Oriental Medicine, the cause of headaches always begins with some form of internal deficiency. This deficiency can allow the invasion of Wind to create an external condition, where the headache occurs concurrently with a common cold. In other cases, the internal deficiency can lead to an excess Yang energy rising to the head, phlegm accumulation, or blood stasis. Yang Rising headaches are often brought on by stress and occur suddenly. Phelgm accumulation headaches feel dull and occur with mental cloudiness. Blood stasis headaches generally occur at night with a sharp, stabbing pain. Chronic headaches can also occur purely from deficiency of Qi, Blood, or Kidney essence. Deficiency headaches tend to have a dull, empty sensation that feels better with pressure on the head.

Headaches can be a sign of a serious medical condition, so it is important to get a thorough medical diagnosis if you have severe chronic headaches.

 

Why Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of Oriental Medicine that is based upon the concept that health comes from the proper the flow of Qi, or energy, in your body. If this flow of Qi in your body becomes unbalanced, pain and disease can result. By inserting acupuncture needles into specific points along meridians, or energy pathways, the flow of Qi can be corrected. Activating your Qi with acupuncture can stop your headache pain and increase your body's natural healing abilities.

 

Several medical studies have been conducted showing the effectiveness of acupuncture for headaches and the decreased use of medications for headache by acupuncture recipients. A 2005 German acupuncture study showed acupuncture treatments decreased the number of headaches reported by patients in half verse the control group. Acupuncture is also excellent at treating stress and muscle contraction in the body, which are the primary causes of Migraine, Tension, and TMJ Headaches. A 2003 Acupuncture for Cluster Headache study showed acupuncture treatment provided a complete resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and aided in the reduced use of corticosteroids.

 

Acupuncture is very effective for neurological disorders, such as headache pain. Studies conducted with functional MRIs that allowed real-time observation of brain activity during acupuncture showed activation or depression of the limbic system, which alters our perception of pain.

 

Acupuncture treatment for headaches always includes a through diagnosis of your condition to develop a treatment plan tailored for your health condition and headache symptoms. Depending on the location of your headache, distal acupuncture points on your hands and feet can be needled to affect the flow of Qi though your head to relieve your headache pain. Additional acupuncture points will be included in the treatment to balance your body and supplement your deficiency condition to prevent future headaches. Microsystems of acupuncture, such as auricular ear acupuncture and scalp acupuncture, may be included in the treatment to enhance acupuncture's effects in treating your headache.

 

Acupuncture can instantly relieve the pain caused by a headache. In some chronic conditions, it is best to receive acupuncture treatments between acute episodes of headache, especially for migraines headaches. In some cases, periodic acupuncture treatments may be required to prevent future occurrences of headache.

Healing Benefits of Massage Therapy

 

   

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years. Today, if you need or want a massage, you can choose from among 80 massage therapy styles with a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques. These all involve pressing, rubbing, or manipulating muscles and other soft tissues with hands and fingers. Sometimes even forearms, elbows, or feet are used.

 

According to a 2007 American Massage Therapy Association survey, almost a quarter of all adult Americans had at least one massage in the previous year. And, they have a wide range of reasons for doing so. More and more people -- especially baby boomers -- recognize the health benefits of massage. They choose from among many massage styles to get relief from symptoms or to heal injuries, to help with certain health conditions, and to promote overall wellness.

  

Many types of massage offer benefits beyond simple relaxation. Here are just a few of the health problems that may benefit from massage. Ask your doctor before using massage for any health condition, though.

 

Back pain. More than one study has shown the effectiveness of massage therapy for back pain. In fact, one 2003 study showed it worked better than acupuncture or spinal modification for persistent low back pain -- reducing the need for painkillers by 36%.

 

Headache. Another type of pain -- headache -- also responds to massage therapy, as shown by more than one study. Massage therapy can reduce the number of migraines a person has and also improve sleep.

 

Osteoarthritis . In the first clinical trial looking at the effectiveness of Swedish massage for knee osteoarthritis, participants who received a one-hour massage either one or two times a week had improvements in pain, stiffness, and function. The control group had no such change.

 

Cancer. Used as a complement to traditional, Western medicine, massage can promote relaxation and reduce cancer symptoms or side effects of treatment. It may help reduce pain, swelling, fatigue, nausea, or depression, for example, or improve the function of your immune system.

 

Anxiety. A review of more than 12 studies shows that massage helps relieve depression and anxiety. It lowered levels of cortisol by up to 50%. And massage increased levels of neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.

 

Key Principles

While there are a wide variety of forms of massage therapy and bodywork, all with their own theoretical or philosophical perspectives, there are certain basic principles they all tend to; hold in common.

 

Circulation of Blood. Perhaps the most basic principle in this field is that improved blood circulation is beneficial for virtually all health conditions. Tension in the muscles and other soft tissues can impair circulation, resulting in a deficient supply of nutrients and inadequate removal of wastes or toxins from the tissues of the body. This in turn can lead to illness, structural and functional problems, or slower healing. Recognition of the importance of blood circulation is implicit in all forms of massage and bodywork.

 

Movement of Lymphatic Fluid. The lymph system is almost as extensive as that of the blood. The circulation of lymphatic fluid plays a key role in ridding the body of wastes, toxins, and pathogens. The lymph system also benefits from massage, particularly in conditions where lymphatic flow is impaired by injury or surgery (e.g., in postmastectomy women).

 

Release of Toxins. Chronic tension or trauma to the soft tissues of the body can result in the buildup of toxic by-products of normal metabolism. Hands-on techniques help move the toxins through the body's normal pathways of release and elimination.

 

Release of Tension. Chronic muscular tension as a result of high stress lifestyles, trauma, or injury can accumulate and impair the body's structure and function. Psychological well-being is also affected. Release of tension allows greater relaxation, which has important physiological and psychological benefits.

 

Structure and Function Are Interdependent. The musculoskeletal structure of the body affects function and function affects structure. Both can be adversely altered by stress or trauma. Massage therapy and bodywork can help restore healthy structure and function, thereby allowing better circulation, greater ease of movement, wider range of movement, more flexibility, and the release of chronic patterns of tension.

 

Enhancement of All Bodily Systems. All bodily systems are affected by better circulation and more harmonious functioning of the soft tissue and musculature. Internal organ systems as well as the nervous system, the immune system, and other systems can benefit. There can be an overall improvement in the quality of life and physical health.

 

Mind/Body Integration. Mind and body have a reciprocal relationship. Soma (body) affects psyche (mind) and vice versa. Hence there can be somatopsychic effects, in which the conditions of the body affect the mind and emotions, and there can be psychosomatic effects, in which psychological or emotional conditions affect the body. Change in one domain may cause change in the other. A habit or fixed pattern in one may also impede change in the other and require special attention. Often psychotherapy and massage or bodywork complement each other.

 

Reduction of Stress. Stress is increasingly believed to induce illness, and perhaps 80 to 90 percent of all disease is stress induced. Massage therapy is an effective non-drug method for reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

 

Energy. Many modalities in this tradition work with the flow of energy through the body as a means to promote healing. Energy can be directed or encouraged to move through and around the body in such ways as to have impact on the physical structure and function of the body as well as on emotional well-being. This work may involve hands-on contact or may be done with no contact with the physical body.
