Headache & Migraine Patient Testimonials

I came to IHC when I began suffering from migraine headaches which run in my family. I was already using medication but this wouldn't prevent it only treat it once they are occurring. I came to IHC looking for a preventative treatment. I would see Mr. Zvarick every chance I could while I was home from college, which is not as much as you should go but I had to work with what I had. I haven't been in quite sometime because I haven't had a migraine! I still get headaches but they not migraines and I am so lucky to have been such a success story! With all my commitments I don't have time to be incapacitated by a migraine. I appreciate everything IHC has done via acupuncture and I continue to go there for massages to help relieve tension in my neck and shoulders which also helps with the regular headaches. I highly recommend this facility to anyone with conditions treatable with acupuncture!

I began acupuncture therapy with 2-3 migraines a week. Each visit relieved the existing migraine to a lesser pain level. Within 4-5 visits, with the added assistance of being taught acupressure, my migraines lessened in frequency and I was able to manage the few that did occur. My visits were not restricted to migraine management, but focused on whole body wellness. Each visit began with an assessment of any pain concerns along with improvements on previous problems. I continue to use acupressure when I feel a migraine beginning and this has proven very effective. In addition to acupuncture, I also took advantage of the massage therapist on staff. The deep tissue massage felt amazing and I left feeling extremely relaxed.

5 years ago after having my first daughter I developed a spinal headache that lasted nine days. Ever since that time I have suffered with headaches, especially around the time of my menses. The headaches around that time would last from 2-3 days and I would be completely useless. I started acupuncture treatments in March of 2011 and my headaches have not only decreased in length around the time of my menses, but the frequency and intensity has also decreased. I actually had an acupuncture treatment while I had a headache and after the treatment I felt like a new woman!

Acupuncture & Migraines
headache

The pain that headache and migraine sufferers endure can impact every aspect of their lives. Acupuncture can offer powerful relief without the side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine have been used to relieve Headaches and Migraines, as well as their underlying causes, for thousands of years and is a widely accepted form of treatment for headaches in our society.

Traditional Chinese Medicine does not recognize migraines and recurring headaches as one particular syndrome. Instead, it aims to treat the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of of techniques such as acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and tui-na massage to restore imbalances found in the body. Therefore, your diagnosis and treatment will depend on a number of variables: Is the headache behind your eyes and temples, or is it located more on the top of your head? When do your headaches occur (i.e. night, morning, after eating)? Do you find that a cold compress or a dark room can alleviate some of the pain? Do you describe the pain as dull and throbbing, or sharp and piercing?

These questions will help create a clear picture on which your practitioners can create a treatment plan specifically for you. The basic foundation for Oriental medicine is that there is a life energy flowing through the body which is termed Qi (pronounced chee). This energy flows through the body on channels known as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According to Chinese medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired effect.

Since the early seventies, studies around the globe have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. Recent studies show extremely positive results:

In a case study, published in the June 2003 Issue of Medical Acupuncture, doctors found that acupuncture resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from cluster headaches and to stimulate adrenal cortisol to aid in discontinuing corticosteroids.

A clinical observation, published in a 2002 edition of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, of 50 patient presenting with various types of headaches were treated with scalp acupuncture. The results of this study showed that 98% of patients treated with scalp acupuncture experienced no headaches or only occasional, mild headaches in the six months following care.

In a study published in the November 1999 issue of Cephalalgia, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of migraines and recurrent headaches by systematically reviewing 22 randomized controlled trials. A total of 1,042 patients were examined. It was found that headache and migraine sufferers experienced significantly more relief from acupuncture than patients who were administered "sham" acupuncture.

Cold & Flu Relief

While the misery of cold and flu season might be inevitable, one thing is changing: where we look for relief.

Acupuncture to Get Better Faster - If you have already come down with a cold or the flu, acupuncture treatments can help relieve symptoms you are currently experiencing including chills, fever, body aches, runny nose, congestion, sore throat and cough. While bringing some immediate relief, treatments will reduce the incidence of an upper respiratory tract infection and shorten the length of the illness.

Acupuncture for Prevention - Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can prevent colds and flu by strengthening the immune system with just a few needles inserted into key points along the body's energy pathways. In Oriental Medicine, disease prevention begins with a protective layer around the exterior of the body called wei qi or defensive energy. There are acupuncture points known for strengthening the circulation of blood and energy and for consolidating the outer defense layers of the skin and muscle (Wei Qi) so that germs and viruses cannot enter through them. If you catch colds easily, have low energy and require a long time recuperating from an illness your wei qi may be deficient.

Tips to help prevent colds and flu:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat plenty of green vegetables
  • Get enough sleep,   7- 8 hours per night
  • Regular exercise, 30 minutes 3x per week
  • Take 1,000 - 2,000mg of vitamin C daily
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often
