Shawn Ahmed
Have you ever wondered what it would take to gain 300,000 Twitter followers? Or millions of viewers on YouTube? Or even bigger, how to go about changing the way people think and talk about charity?
If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, then you definitely won't want to miss out on this! On December 6th, Shawn Ahmed, founder of The Uncultured Project (uncultured.com), will be speaking on campus at Forum Hall at 7 p.m. It's free and everyone is encouraged to attend!
A few years ago Shawn was sitting in a large lecture hall, like many of us sit in on a daily basis, when he decided to do something to help alleviate global poverty. He withdrew from school, sold all of his possessions, liquidated his savings, and flew to Bangladesh to do his part to save the world. Now, only a few years later, he has nearly 300,000 Twitter followers, millions of viewers on YouTube, and has created a type of organization that charities and NGOs can only dream of mimicking. Shawn has raised thousands of dollars to help the poor around the world while not making a dime for himself, and in the process has begun to completely revolutionize the way people think and talk about "charity."
Let's give Shawn a warm K-State welcome and pack Forum Hall! This is sure to be an event that will leave you inspired and excited about the future of the world, so I hope that everyone can make it out!
Please be sure to pass this along to anyone and everyone and check out the Facebook event. |

Light Up The Little Apple!
It's that time of year again! Alpha Chi Omega is holding their annual "Light Up the Little Apple" philanthropy. This event is an opportunity for Greeks to get in the holiday spirit and show off their best lighting/decoration displays. Chapter houses may choose to enter outdoor lighting displays, indoor tree decorations, out-of-house décor or all of the above!
The proceeds from this event benefit The Crisis Center, Inc., a local provider of resources and support to victims of domestic violence, abuse and sexual assault. Please join Alpha Chi Omega this season in spreading cheer to those who desperately need to be shown love and hope.
Judging will be done by a select panel of K-State celebrities. Last year, both Wally Judge and the K-State Women's Basketball team participated! Judging will occur during "Dead Week". Chapters will be notified of the exact date after choosing to participate. Winners will be notified shortly thereafter.

Teach For America Seeking Top Leaders at K-State This week, I had the opportunity to meet with Quinn Dennehy, a representative from Teach for America. Because I am not pursuing a teaching degree, I had never considered working for this organization before. However, after a twenty minute discussion with Quinn, I was hooked. Please take the time to read the information below and don't hesitate to contact Quinn if you have any questions at all. The next application deadline is Dec.17, so hurry up and check out their site! -Natalie Rauth, PHC Director of Public Relations
The Challenge: Educational inequity starts early and gets worse over time. By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers. Just half of students in low-income communities will graduate high school by age 18. Those who do graduate will perform on average at an eighth-grade level. Overall, only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college. Our Approach: Teach For America enlists the top leaders from college campuses around the nation to serve as corps members (teachers) for two years in low income classrooms to close the achievement gap. 20 years of historical data shows that demonstrated leadership is a variable that strongly correlates with being an excellent teacher; in fact, independent studies show Teach For America teachers are actually more effective than traditionally trained and veteran teachers. After the corps, no matter what sector of society corps members take their careers, they become strong advocates for students in low income communities the rest of their lives so that one day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. The Perks: -$30,000- 51,000 a year starting salary -$10.700 received after commitment to use toward graduate school or student loans -Alumni network of over 20,000 top leaders -Graduate school and employer partnerships including Yale Law School, Harvard Medical School, and JP Morgan Learn more at our website. GAMMA Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol
Are you interested in forming a peer education group that works as a team to identify high-risk student behavior and then creatively develops ways to educate Greek members?
GAMMA is a leadership program specifically for fraternity and sorority members who agree to be advocates to their chapter members. GAMMA members can lead the way for learning more about health and safety issues, and reduce some of the high-risk behaviors that can cause harm to individuals or to the chapter.
