Spring Break Safety Tips

Every year thousands of college students participate in some type of spring break activity whether it is in a tropical climate, ski trip, or read trip.  Some students choose to participate in high-risk behaviors during spring break, and it is crucial for all participants to think about safety and know your limits.  The following tips will help you stay safe while you have a great time over spring break.

1) Set Boundaries for behavior (sexual activity, alcohol consumption, where you are going to party) before you go out, Look out for your friends, and Stay together:  You will likely be in an unfamiliar location and the best way to stay safe is to stay together.  Do not let your friends go off with strangers, and if your group separates you need to make specific plans to meet back up.  Make sure your group members are aware of the warning signs of alcohol poisoning and make sure everyone is willing to call for medical assistance if someone is showing signs of alcohol poisoning.

2) Make sure you always have a responsible and sober group member:  This person can serve as a designated driver and will make sure the group members are being safe and responsible.

3) Make sure you have sober, alert, and awake drivers:  Check your tires, buckle up, plan your travel route, and make sure you get enough rest before you start a long road trip.  Do Not Drink and Drive...Call a Taxi Cab....program the number of a cab service in your phone!

4) Know your limits when consuming alcohol:  Never drink and drive; respect other people's rights, and your own, to choose not to drink or not to drink to excess; Know the warning signs of alcohol poisoning; Drink plenty of water and get enough rest....if you pace yourself, you'll have more fun for a longer period of time.

5) Safe Sex....Consentual Sex:  If you engage in sexual activity, always use protection (condoms or a barrier), and make sure both you and your partner consent to the sexual activity.  In most states, individuals are unable to legally consent to sexual activity if they have consumed drugs or alcohol.  Constent = Sober.

6) Watch out for predatory drugs such as GHB, Alcohol (the most common predatory drug), Rohypnol, or Ketamine. Throw your drink out if you notice something wrong (powder on the glass or a funny taste). Also known as date rape drugs, you can limit the risk of these drugs by always watching your drink (don't leave your drink with friends or at the bar while you are dancing, in the bathroom, or talking to friends); Only drink from up-opened bottles or cans, or drinks you've seen poured; Avoid group drinks such as Fish Bowls, Jungle Juice, or containers that are passed around.  If you think you've been drugged tell someone immediately and get to a safe place.

7) Wear Sun Screen an protect your skin from over exposure.  It's tough to have a good time if you are suffering from serious sun burns.

8) Be smart about international travel:  If you are traveling abroad, stick to the resorts and tourist locations.  The hotel concierge will be able to help you identify safe destinations.  Also, check for safety warnings or travel advisories prior to you trip. Obey local laws...you don't want to end up in a Mexican jail!

Warning Signs of Alcohol Poisoning:
1) Mental Confusion, stupor, coma, or person is unresponsive
2) Vomiting, Seizures, Slow breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute)
3) Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths)
4) Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness

What to do if you recognize alcohol poisoning symptoms?
1) Try to wake the person - call them by their name, pinch their skin - they should have some reaction.
2)  Turn the person on their side/ Do not leave them:  This will keep their airways open and prevent choking if they vomit.  Make sure they don't roll over on their back.
3) Check skin color and temperature:  If the person's skin is cold, clammy, or pale/bluish they are not getting enough oxygen.
4) Check the person's breathing: If the person is breathing irregularly with a few breaths and nothing for a while, medical attention is necessary.  Less than 8 breaths a minute or more than 10 seconds between breaths is another sign.
5) If you cannot wake the person up at all, it is a serious situation and you need to get help immediately.
