Some Lessons from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) Conference
Two weeks ago the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council members were given the opportunity to attend the AFLV conference in St. Louis. The weekend was designed to give Greek leaders ideas, advice, and direction to improve their communities. We attended small group sessions, listened to speakers from all over the country, and attended functions in the evening with other conference members. Here's what we learned:
Ashley Joerger, President: At AFLV, I learned what challenges other Greek communities across the nation face and what resources and strategies we can use to overcome conflict. Sydney Sutherland, Vice President, Chief Judicial Affairs: In one of my sessions from AFLV, I attended many New Member Education
realmed sessions, in which one we talked about how to run an efficient
meeting. Sometimes as many of us know cliques are something that can
damper a meeting, to fix this situation they offered for us to use them
to their advantage and keep them together but to actually give them a
job that they could do. Might not apply to everyone but certainly is
something to think about. Rebeka Scott, Director of Risk Management: Fraternities and sororities are the sixth riskiest establishments to
insure, right behind hazardous waste facilities and asbestos removal
companies. Natalie Rauth, Director of Public Relations: I attended many sessions related to social media. I am hoping to implement many new marketing channels for our Greek community!
Heather Houchen, Director of Community & Internal Relations: I learned how to look more deeply into the need of your community to create a worthwhile philanthropy event to give back more effectively.
Kiley Huff, Director of Recruitment (Recruitment Guides): I met a lot of really great people who were so friendly and open to sharing their school's recruitment knowledge! Jennifer Pike, Director of Recruitment (Logistics): Through AFLV I was able to learn just how great our Greek system is here at K-State! Lauren Halsey, Director of Recruitment (COB/Retention): The alumni center is a GREAT untapped resource! They have access to all
alumni's name and affiliation while they were in school, as well
as, current address, phone numbers, and occupations. We will be using
them more often in the months to come to help our juniors and seniors
to stay involved not only for 4 years... but for a lifetime!
