Help prevent the spread of influenza in your chapter
K-State and Greek Affairs is prepared to help your chapter respond to sick members, but more importantly, we want to help you be aware of how your chapter can stay healthy.  Here's what you should know:

H1N1 flu is spread through respiratory droplets that are coughed or sneezed into the air. It may also be spread by virus that remains on hands after coughing or sneezing that gets spread to others through common use items such as phones, doorknobs, desks and keyboards.

If you or one of your chapter sisters are sick, have them stay home to avoid spreading illness.  Encourage them not to go to class or chapter functions and certianly do not require their attendance.

All members should use simple caution during the flu season: cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues. Clean hands after using tissues with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and warm water.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting adequate rest and exercise.

Should members in  your chapter become ill, please contact the Greek Affairs office immediately.

All Greek students received the and annual email encouraging safety.  Included this semester was special information about influenza and other timely cautions.  Read the newsletter now.
DELTA SIGMA PHI, SIGMA KAPPA, UNION PROGRAM COUNCIL TO HOST 'MOMORIAL' IN HONOR OF FALLEN BROTHER

Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Kappa, and the Union Program Council are hosting the 1st Annual MoMorial, in honor of Mauritz "Mo" Meyer, a Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brother whose life tragically ended in a car accident last fall. The event is being held on Sunday, November 1st, in the City Auditorium at 1101 Ponytz, at 12:00 Noon.

Russell Buchanan, Mo's roommate, describes the MoMorial, below:

I met Mauritius Arnoldus Meyer my very first day of freshman year at Lansing High School. It's hard to believe now, but back then he never spoke, not even to ask the teacher a question in class.

Over the years we got to know each other pretty well, well enough to decide to live together at K-State. Mo and I were both interested in Greek life, so we decided to enter the rush process together. At the end of the summer we both made the decision to pledge with Delta Sigma Phi.

I'll never forget the day we moved in. It felt like we were young and powerful with nothing but memories to be made. Neither of us felt it that day, but we would soon learn that we were boys with so much left to learn about the world.

Over the course of the pledging process we grew together, first as better friends, and then as brothers. I can say to this day that we left a lot of immaturity behind on our way to being brothers. One of the proudest moments of my life is when we made it, and were fully initiated brothers of Delta Sigma Phi.

I'll never forget the day of the accident. Everything about my life at that point seemed like a dream. I was about to turn 19, a brother, and I had a lot to look forward to as the semester closed. That dream quickly turned into a nightmare when our Chapter President told me that we needed to get in touch of Mo's parents right then.

The rest of the day is a huge blur. I remember hope, a meal hardly stomached, phone calls, a hospital room and a sense of despair. But mostly, I remember breaking down next to his bed. I just couldn't grasp it and I really don't think I ever will.

Mo left us with a lot to learn. He was a person who loved to have fun and enjoy all the things life offered him. This is why we decided to honor his memory with something fun, rather than something more staid.

Mo cared about his studies. Which is why the money raised from this event is going to a scholarship fund in Mo's name. Mo would love the idea of helping another person get an education.

But most of all Mo loved and cared for people. Which is why it would have made so happy to see all of you there.

Hopefully this has made you understand why philanthropy has meaning for our Chapter. We hope to see all of you there, and are eagerly awaiting remembering Mo with all of you.

The Alpha Lambda chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Kansas State University will sponsor Teke Powder Puff Football, a sorority flag football tournament and Kansas State Greek tradition for almost forty years! In addition, the Tekes will sponsor the first annual Teke 'Give-Away', a gift certificate drawing. The proceeds from both Teke events will benefit Alzheimer's Association Ronald and Nancy Reagan Alzheimer's Research Institute.

Teke Powder Puff Football 'pool play' will begin on Sunday, November 1 at 10:00 AM at the K-State Recreational Services' playfields. The top four finishers will advance to the tournament semi-finals and finals on Sunday, November 8 beginning at 10:00 AM at the K-State Recreational Services' playfields. All K-State students are invited to attend!

The Teke 'Give-Away' is a drawing for the chance to win $75 gift certificates from Varney's Book Store, or $50 gift certificates from Kite's Grille & Bar. A $5 donation is requested for each chance to win. A drawing for the gift certificates will be held on Friday, November 20. Winners will be contacted by phone and the winner does NOT need to be present to win. 'Give-Away' tickets will be sold by Teke members beginning November 1. Watch for the Alzheimer's Association/Powder Puff Football/Give-Away table at the K-State Union.

The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research with national office in Chicago, IL. In 1995 the Alzheimer's Association established the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute. In 2004 the Alzheimer's Association joined the world in mourning the loss of Teke alum President Ronald Reagan 10 years after announcing his Alzheimer diagnosis.

Up Til Dawn
Please read the following message from Lee Van Loenen, Director of Up Til Dawn.

My name is Lee Van Loenen and I am the Director of the Up Til Dawn student group here at Kansas State University.  I'm hope that you are aware of what we do on campus, but right now we need your help.

I have attached below the pdf flyer explaining one way UTD is trying to raise funds this year.  It is a text messaging coupon system (that you can use at many businesses and restaurants).  The best part is that you are NOT put on any listservs or spam email lists.  What we want to do is get as many people to sign up because UTD/St. Jude will get a donation for each person that registers.

If you have questions about what we do or how to register, contact me as soon as you can.

Please check the flyer out, forward it to your fraternity and sorority brothers and sisters, and help us fight childhood cancer!

For the Kids!

Up Til Dawn
Out & Greek Conference for LGBT & Ally Fraternity & Sorority Members
Kansas State University is the location for the second annual Leadership Conference.

Out & Greek Logo

The conference, which will take place November 19-22 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, is the only conference of its kind for LGBT and ally fraternity and sorority members nationally. Registration now open along with call for workshop presenters online athttp://www.lambda10.org/outandgreek.

Echoing the mission of Campus Pride's Lambda 10 educational initiative, the Out and Greek Conference aims to bring together lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and ally members of fraternities and sororities in an effort to foster dialogue and create safer, more LGBT-friendly learning environments at colleges and universities.

"Fraternities and sororities were once considered a primary source of homophobia on college campuses," said conference chair Chelsey Fritch who is also a member of Gamma Rho Lambda, one of the nations queer-inclusive sororities. "But now more than ever LGBT members of the Greek system are being open and honest about who we are. This conference hopes to provide an opportunity to enhance that dialogue, share tools and create further strategies for change."

The Out and Greek Conference will also provide an opportunity for students and professional staff from across the country to lead and present workshops on best practices from their campus fraternity and sorority community. Further details, a schedule of events as well as information becoming a workshop presenter, may be found by visiting http://www.lambda10.org/outandgreek.

According to Campus Pride, Kansas State University was chosen to host the conference due to the fact that it has both a men's fraternity and a women's sorority for LGBT members - Delta Lambda Phi and Gamma Rho Lambda. Along with Fritch as the chair, members of both organizations are part of the planning team. "K-State is proud to host the second annual conference. We have created something special within Greek Life on our campus and we hope to share it with others across the country," Fritch said.
National sponsors currently include Campuspeak, Beck & Company, Tyvola Design and the Association of Fraternity Advisors.

For more information about the conference and how to become a sponsor, please visit www.lambda10.org/outandgreek, email Campus Pride at info@campuspride.org or call 704-277-6710.

Its a babysitting service that is coordinated with Fort Riley and is a service offered for families with a deployed parent to give them a chance to do some Christmas shopping without having to worry about finding a babysitter.
