National Women's Friendship Day
|
In 1999 Kappa Delta Sorority created National Women's Friendship Day for the third Saturday in September. It was created to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of friendship among women. Friendships among women strengthen who we are, how we live, love and work. After a great ten years of events, it is now celebrated by Kappa Delta as National Women's Friendship Month. This year Kappa Delta celebrated in many ways throughout the month of September, by presenting gifts to other sororities and holding an event at their house with various activities, including writing cards and letters to friends, making picture frames and eating good food. The local Manhattan Girl Scout troop attended the event. There was also a friendship bracelet booth in the Student Union, on Monday, September 28th to end out the month, there was a great turnout to support National Women's Friendship Month!

| Beta Theta Pi and Riley County Fire Department Host Haunted House to Fight Hunger |
K-State
fraternity Beta Theta Pi and the Riley County Fire Department will be hosting a
haunted house at 500 Sunset Ave. Manhattan, Kan. on Oct. 30, 2009 to benefit
the Flint Hills Breadbasket. In
years past, Beta Theta Pi has hosted the philanthropy "Beta Boo" on or around
Halloween. Starting a week before the event, fraternity members begin turning
their fraternity house into a haunted house. Complete with tour guides,
costumes and plenty of scares, the event creates lines out the door waiting to
get in. Riley
County Fire Department contacted Beta Theta Pi Chapter President Josh Parker at
the beginning of the semester to see if the fraternity would be interested in
co-sponsoring the event to open it up to the Manhattan metropolitan area. Riley
County Fire Department has agreed to cover the advertisement costs and to help
other additional costs. "This
is a great opportunity for Beta to expand our philanthropy with the help of the
Riley County Fire Department," Parker said. "Our philanthropy will have a
greater reach and our efforts to help Flint Hills Breadbasket could be
increased greatly." Admission
for the haunted house will be three canned food items or three dollars per
person. There will be a session for children running from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
and an adult session running from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Logan
Gauby, Beta Theta Pi Philanthropy Chair, said that in years past they have
received over a thousand pounds of food and several hundred dollars of
donations. This next year Gauby has hopes of more than doubling that amount.
Beta Theta Pi looks to continue co-sponsoring this event with Riley County Fire
Department in years to come. |
Sorority Formal Membership Recruitment
|
This past August Kansas State
University's Panhellenic Council hosted Fall 2009 Sorority Formal Membership
Recruitment (FMR). A total of 617
participants were registered to attend - a new record for enrollment.
The week held many exciting changes,
including direct move-in to dorms for the new members before recruitment and the first-ever Bid Day
celebration on the front lawn of Anderson Hall. The energy at the celebration
was amazing as K-State's new President himself welcomed all the new sorority
women and congratulated our chapters on a successful recruitment. The celebration is "a new K-State tradition"
according to President Kirk Schulz.
"I couldn't have been more pleased
with how smoothly Recruitment went this year. The changes we instituted seemed
to get a positive response especially on Bid Night. I was really excited to
see our plans unfold and be put into action. Everyone seemed to enjoy the
evening and it was great to see support from Dr. Bosco and President Schulz. It
looks like Bid Night celebrations on Anderson lawn will be an ongoing tradition
and that was one of the goals we wanted to accomplish. The week kept us busy but I think it turned
out really successful and I've gotten some great feedback." Added Director of Recruitment, Katie
McKenzie. Ellen Burke the other Director
of Recruitment also commented, "recruitment this year was great! All our
chapters continued to impress these young women throughout the week. Everyone came together as a team to
accomplish such a huge endeavor with success all around. I'd say the highlight
for me was Bid-Night --you could feel the actual energy and
excitement from all our sorority women ready to welcome their new
members!"
Here are a few quick facts from FMR
2009:
· Retention
throughout the week continued to be successful as nearly 87% of the potential
new members were retained throughout the complete process.
·
Quota was set at 46. Ten of the 11 groups took quota. Quota
additions to one group took the sorority to a total of 58 invitations!
·
All sororities are at total. This is a first in over 15 years for
K-State!
·
This is the most sorority women returning to campus we have ever had at
K-State. At the conclusion of FMR, our
total Panhellenic membership (1720 members) is the largest is has ever been at
K-State.

Fraternity Recruitment
|
During the past year, the Greek Community has implemented
two new initiatives to boost fraternity recruitment at the community
level. The first of these was the first
annual "Fraternity Experience." At this
event, high school students were given the opportunity to tour several houses,
attend Greek block party events, and spend the night at a chapter house. The K-State Greek Community put on a great
event, and hopefully this is something that will grow and improve in the
future. Secondly, a new K-State IFC
youtube.com channel is up and running.
On this youtube channel, chapters can post video tours of their
house. This provides a great place for
PNMs to experience several of our chapters from the comfort of their
homes. The channel can be accessed at www.youtube.com/KStateIFC.
