Guidelines and Expectations for Safe, Responsible, and Fun Tailgating
Welcome or welcome back!  Are excited about K-State football and the opportunities it presents for safe, responsible, and fun tailgating.  This article outlines IFC, PHC and University expectations regarding appropriate tailgating activities and protective behaviors used by K-State students to ensure safe socializing.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council (PHC) policies, Federal and State Laws, and University policies prohibit the possession and or consumption of alcohol by persons less than 21 years of age.

University policy prohibits the possession or consumption of alcohol in all athletic facilities and parking areas.

Inter/National Fraternity and Sorority Headquarters expectations may further limit the presence or use of alcohol at chapter coordinated/sponsored events or activities that meet your chapter headquarters' definition of a chapter event.  If unclear what constitutes an chapter activity or event, please contact your headquarters for guidance well in advance of undertaking any activities.

Individuals or chapters who violate these expectations may be subject to one or more of the following actions:
  1. Arrest and further legal action such as fines, probation;
  2. University review under the K-State Code of Student conduct which may jeopardize your student status;
  3. IFC or PHC review under the Events Management Policy which may jeopardize a chapter's status;
  4. Referral to inter/national headquarters for review which may jeopardize a chapter's standing with its parent organization.
It is our goal that you have an enjoyable and safe game day. Successfully meeting this goal depends on your healthy decisions and wise choices.

The following protective behaviors are often used by K-State students:

Walk in groups; arrive, attend, and depart from events as a group; only accept beverages that are closed or you have observed being filled; make a plan for the evening prior to departing home; agree on a time and location to check in with friends; consume non-alcoholic beverages, eat non-salty food, drinking alcohol only if 21 or older; if choosing to drink, drink in moderation - one drink or less per hour, use Saferide and Wildcat Walk.

K-State is a safe and respectful campus.  Safety and respect are a shared responsibility.  We hope you will do your part to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.

You are encouraged to visit www.ksu.edu/hd to learn more about K-State's Healthy Choices initiative that was started to help enhance the lifestyle of K-State students and their peers by providing information, assistance and support to make healthy choices regarding alcohol and
other life-related issues.

Injury data shows that alcohol is a contributing factor in many injuries including sexual assault.  Don't allow yourself or someone else to become a statistic.
Awareness is Key to Safety
According to Mary Todd, K-State Women's Center Director, " Most of the sexual assaults we will deal with will have happened at parties or after social gatherings in Aggieville or elsewhere, and perpetrated by individuals acquainted with the victims," Todd said. "Perpetrators often rely on alcohol and drugs to make victims vulnerable to attack, and target those who they think are alone, intoxicated, or vulnerable. It is important to stick with trusted friends at parties and to realize that rapists initially look and act like any other student."

"All students, male and female, should be attentive to their surroundings, and to stick with friends after dark," Todd said. "Across the country, both males and females on college campuses can be targeted for crimes of robbery, sexual battery, rape and assault. Particularly in the early weeks of school, while surroundings are new to many students, perpetrators who do have knowledge of the area can disappear quickly.
