What is Lighten the Load Smart Savings Program?
JEA is taking an active role in energy efficiency and making a difference in the peak electrical load generated by TVA. As part of that effort we have started a pilot program much like TVA's former program called Cycle and Save. Our program is called Lighten the Load and it incents customers to allow JEA to turn off electric water heaters during peak periods and times of system emergency should they occur. Water heaters are a significant factor in home energy use and come on often throughout the day even when you are not there. Controlling these types of appliances is called load management but it is simply turning off unneeded load during periods when electric generation uses the most costly of resources. This enables TVA to generate less energy on peak and avoid use of higher cost generation sources.

How does the Lighten the Load program work?
In order to participate, you must qualify. To qualify, you must be a JEA customer with a household that has a 40 gallon or larger sized electric water heater. Next, you volunteer to have a load management receiving device installed on the participating electric water heater. Once installed, the receiver device becomes part of the JEA pilot program and you are on your way to saving energy. When demand reaches an extremely high level, a load management operator sends a signal to various load management receivers. These receivers then temporarily switch off power to the water heaters they are connected. By sending these remote signals to save energy, JEA is able to reduce demand across a large majority of its service area.

What does the device look like and where will the
device be installed?

A picture of the device is found at right. Its dimensions are approximately 10" long (up and down) by 8" wide (side to side) and 4" deep. In most instances it is attached to the wall with 2 small screws and connected to the wiring of the water heater.

Why am I being offered load management?
Energy efficiency and decreasing system peak load are two programs that JEA is currently pursuing. These are just two ways that JEA is taking an active role in assisting to keep electric rates as low as possible. Because electric water heaters are one of the biggest sources of electric consumption in your home and the deployment of the program should produce intended results.
