March Bill Insert: How To Read Your Water Meter.
Knowing how to read your water meter can tell you how much water you use in a day and help you check for leaks.
Most water meters are generally located outside near the curb in front of your home enclosed in a metal or concrete box usually marked "water." To access the meter, carefully open the lid with pliers or a screwdriver (be aware that it could be heavy.) Most often, the meter will have a hinged cap to protect the face. Flip the cap up to view the face. There are a few models of water meters, but typically they look like the one above. It records volume by gallons and is read in hundred gallons. Reading the sample below, water usage will be billed at 1935 hundred gallons.

To check for water leaks, turn off all water-using fixtures (washer, shower, toilet, etc.) and make sure nobody is using water inside or outside the house. On the water meter, find the low flow indicator (the small red (or blue) triangle to the left of the needle on the dial) and watch it for 5 minutes or so. The indicator is sensitive to any water flow,so if it turns while no water is being used, there is a leak. Common places to find hidden leaks are faucets, toilets, outside hydrants, etc. If you have any questions or need more information, please call 422-7500.
The Water We Drink:
Water is one of the most essential elements to our health. The cell and organ functions that make up our entire anatomy and physiology depend on water, thus we cannot live without it. Because water plays such a major role in our health and well-being, it is crucial to have access to a supply of high-quality, safe drinking water.
At Jackson Energy Authority, our mission is to provide our customers with the most reliable drinking water supply at the highest quality. Our water comes from an underground aquifer trapped in sand between layers of clay. As deep wells pump millions of gallons of water from the aquifers, the water is treated, filtered and tested on a daily basis to ensure the quality meets or exceeds stringent state and federal standards. This constant testing and monitoring enables us to provide clean, safe drinking water to our customers and community.
