A Sincere Thank You from a Graduating Senior

thank you!

To the Librarians of Bird Library,

Just wanted to thank you all for your aid and guidance for the past four years. You have been very helpful and readily available when needed. Having a mother who is a school librarian, I have a strong appreciation for your hard work, and obvious passion for education and reading. Bird has always been my favorite place to do school work since I know if I need anything or have a question you will be there.

Sincerely,

Ella Blythe Froggatt '12 (Arts & Sciences)

Plastics Collection Expands Online Presence

The Plastics Collection

The Library has launched a redesigned and expanded website devoted to its extensive Pl
astics Collection. The new site (plastics.syr.edu) now offers approximately 3,000 objects with high quality photographs, information about plastic materials and processes, and twice the previous number of biographies and company histories. Of particular note, viewers can now submit additional information about objects, people, and companies through the site.

Read the full press release.

Library ID Tags

ID tagsAll permanent full-time and part-time Library employees have received lanyards with the generic term of Library Staff, Library Security or Librarian printed on the ID tag. We are asking that all staff wear these lanyards during the day while working. As we are a service department, we feel it is important for library patrons to be able to identify Library staff at any time if they have a question or problem.

In addition we will have a certain number of student lanyards indicating Library Student Assistant or Library Floor Monitor to be shared by the students in public areas. The students will be expected to wear the tags while "on the clock" and return the lanyards after their shift.

We thank you for your cooperation in this endeavor. Questions or concerns involving this should be brought to Dale King's attention.

Update on ESF Access to SUL E-resources

SUNY ESF logoHere is the latest information on the previously-announced changes regarding ESF access to SU Library e-resources.

  • After May 15, 2012, SUNY ESF users will no longer be able to access SUL-licensed Library e-resources (databases, e-journals, etc.) from the ESF campus or from off-campus locations.
  • Likewise, SUL users will not be able access ESF-licensed resources except from Moon Library.
  • This move was necessitated by 1) changes in the terms of e-resources licenses with respect to SUNY ESF's status as a separate institution, and 2) to bring us into legal compliance with these licenses.
  • The process will take place over the course of the summer, but in the next couple of weeks, ESF users will be removed from the SU proxy server.
  • SUNY ESF-affiliated users can still use the full range of resources from an SU Library.
  • Moon Library director Steve Weiter sent a message to ESF students and faculty on Tuesday, May 8 outlining these changes.

Library employees who get questions from the public, including from members of the ESF community, should refer all questions to the ESF Moon reference desk at 470-6711, Moon's Reference Question Form, or the "Changes at Moon Library" LibGuide.

Mulroney to Present Paper at Newberry Library Seminar

Lucy Mulroney, curator in SCRC, has been invited to present her paper, entitled "Andy Warhol and the American Photobook" during the 2012-2013 Newberry Library Seminar in American Art and Visual Culture next March in Chicago, Ill.

This seminar provides a forum for presenting current research, as well as a venue that brings together a diverse community of local and regional Americanists for intellectual exchange, collegial conversation, and debate. Seminar participants give papers that cross and challenge borders both within and outside the discipline, that engage questions of methodology and ideology, probe the categories of race, ethnicity, class, and gender, and reflect critically on the state and outlook of the field.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago, the Department of History and Political Science at Purdue University Calumet, The Karla Scherer Center for the Study of American Culture at the University of Chicago, and the Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Memorial Bench Plaque for Michael DeSalvo

memorial benchA conversation among a few of Michael's friends and colleagues recently centered around the desire to do something "closer to home" to remember him, separate from/in addition to the American Cancer Society donation suggested by the family.

For a donation of $500, a plaque can be added to one the benches located under the trees just across from the Library (on the corner of Campus Drive and University near the bus stop). Michael was an avid gardener, loved the outdoors and took the bus to and from work so we thought this would be a great way to remember him in an ongoing way.

We invite you to join us in contributing money for this effort. Money is being collected through the Library Business Office through the end of May. Checks can be made out to Syracuse University and cash is accepted.

For those of you who have already given, thank you so much for your generosity. To date, we have collected about $800 -- almost enough to purchase two bench plaques! Stay tuned for an announcement regarding the installation.

Make Your Summer Sustainable

SU - the green

Will you be away from your campus office for an extended period this summer? If so, before leaving, please do the following:

  • Turn off and unplug all office and personal electronics such as computers, monitors, printers, paper shredders, televisions, chargers, etc.
  • Take home plants or have a co-worker take care of them.
  • Close and lock all windows.
  • Turn off all office lights on your way out.

All of these efforts save energy and contribute to SU's Climate Action Plan, the institutional blueprint for becoming carbon neutral.

Think Before You Print

unclaimed paper from printers
Unclaimed paper from Bird Library printers

Help us reduce paper waste by being aware of which printer your work is being sent to. The Green Library Team is working to clarify the names of the printers around the and is also investigating setting staff and public printers to grayscale by default.

So far, there are four areas in the Library that have reduced the number of printers in their units and/or are using copiers as their default printers. These areas include: Business Services, Special Collections, Acquisitions and Cataloging, and the Learning Commons.

Please send additional ideas and suggestions for reducing toner and paper use to Bevan Angier or Tasha Cooper.

Brooker Earns a BA!

Barb and Jenn
Barb with her daughter, Jenn.

Congratulations to Barb Brooker (SCRC) who graduated this spring with a BA in Psychology. Barb began taking classes towards a bachelor's degree in 1997 when she came to work at the University. This fall, Barb will be starting her graduate studies in Renaissance History.

Otto Spotters

OttoWhere in the Library is Otto? A plush Otto (at right) is circulating throughout the Library. He's given to staff members who are making a difference and a positive contribution. Each employee keeps Otto for a week and then pass him along to another deserving co-worker.

If you spot Otto in the Library, snap a picture and send it, along with details of where you saw him, to libcom@syr.edu. We'll pick one name from all of the "Otto Spotter" submissions to win a prize (winners will be selected using random.org).

Staff News

Got news? Please feel free to send us any news items that you would like to share with colleagues -- graduations, weddings, new babies, travels, and such. As always, we welcome your feedback, comments, questions, or story ideas. Send your contributions to libcom@syr.edu.

Many thanks for your interest!
