New Staff

Suzanne Guiod
Suzanne E. Guiod has been appointed Editor in Chief at the Syracuse University Press. Suzanne will join us on June 16. She has served as editorial director of the University of Rochester Press in Rochester, New York since 2004, where she has overseen the growth of several series, including the prestigious and award-winning Eastman Studies in Music series. Under her direction, the University of Rochester Press was accepted as a full AAUP member in 2011. Prior to her appointment at Rochester, Suzanne was Northeast publisher for Arcadia Publishing and managing editor of the Encyclopedia of New England (Yale University Press, 2005). She holds a master's degree in English literature from the University of New Hampshire and is a graduate of Arizona State University's Scholarly Publishing Program. She is a native of Boston.

With the creation of a new editor-in-chief position, Syracuse University Press intends to forge new and stronger relationships with SU faculty, programs, departments, and schools, thereby strengthening its position as an essential and integral component of University research and scholarship. In reinforcing these campus connections, Ms. Guiod will identify new opportunities to demonstrate the mission of university press publishing: disseminating the University's scholarship, as well as research from around the world. She will play a critical role in establishing the Press as a leader in the innovative use of new publishing modalities and technologies.

Please join me in welcoming Suzanne.

Library Conduct Policy Staff Procedures

Syracuse University Library
The Library increasingly has become a destination of choice for students seeking a place to study and collaborate. While we are pleased to be such a popular spot for students, the increased use of the building also has been accompanied by an increase in noise-related complaints. Employees working at service desks or in other public spaces in the libraries serve as first-responders when issues arise, but all library employees are expected to help curtail disruptive behavior and enforce Library policies.

We have taken the following steps to address noise and disruptive behavior issues:
  • We have posted a condensed version of the Library Use and Conduct policy in various places throughout Bird Library,
  • We have distributed the same text as a handout to service points in all libraries,
  • We have expanded supervisor coverage to ensure that there is a supervisor on duty on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings-times when previously there has not been a supervisor on duty,
  • We have implemented a data collection form and procedure to capture information about disruptive incidents to help develop longer-range strategies for dealing with these issues,
  • We have drafted procedures for library employees to follow when responding to complaints about noise or other disruptions,
  • We have asked Gerri McCarthy to conduct training sessions on these procedures for "front line" service desk staff.

The procedures are effective immediately.

Gerri McCarthy has set up discussion sessions to review updated procedures relating to handling violations of the Library Use and Conduct Policy. Staff working most closely with patrons has already been informed of this training by their supervisor, but all are welcome to attend. if you'd like to attend a session, please register through the Library Training site at libtraining.syr.edu

Thank you in advance for your attention and cooperation. Please contact Bobbi Gwilt, Dale King, Pamela McLaughlin, or Lisa E. Moeckel if you have any questions about this matter.

"Food for Fines"

Food for Fines
On Thursday, April 19, the libraries of SU and SUNY-ESF participated in a "Food for Fines" amnesty day by collecting food for the needy and offering patrons the opportunity to reduce their overdue fines. A total of 770 non-perishable items were collected and donated to the Cathedral Emergency Services food pantry in downtown Syracuse.

Participating libraries included Bird, the Science and Technology Library, the Mathematics Library, the Geology Library, the Barclay Law Library, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the Architecture Reading Room, and ESF's Moon Library.

The program will be held again in the fall.

New Links on Library Intranet

Three new links have been added to the Library Intranet.

There is a new navigation link on the left hand side called "Internal Policies and Guidelines." Here you will find documents that are internal policies, procedures and guidelines meant for the library staff.

The first procedure in the Internal Policies and Guidelines list is the new document outlining "Staff Procedures for Enforcing Library Conduct Policy" (a.k.a. Noise Procedure). The Noise Procedure references a new application that can be reached through a new link on the right side of the page under "Link Type: Application/Systems" called Complaints and Incidents. All Library Staff can log complaints or incidents they observe or hear about by clicking on this link. The main purpose of this log is for collecting data. In order to resolve the problem, please follow up with the appropriate personnel.

The third new link is the Library Policies and Guidelines page on the Library site can be accessed through our intranet Library page by clicking the link from the right hand side under the group called "Link Type: Library Information."

Please take some time and check out these new links!

GreenTip

Keep your digital "vampires" from feeding at night!

Green Team logoTurn off your computer when you leave for the day! Even on standby your computer is drawing power, and it doesn't take that long for it to boot up in the morning. One easy way to make sure you're not wasting energy is to plug your computer, monitor, printer, and any other peripherals you use into a single power strip. Once your computer is shut down, you can effectively unplug it and all the other pieces by turning off the power strip. That's a lot easier than unplugging everything individually and plugging them back in the next morning. Just turn the power strip back on and restart the computer.

Librarian Accomplishments

DttP winning photoJohn Olson, Librarian for Government Documents, Geography, Earth Science, Geographic Information, entered and won the 2012 Documents to the People (DttP) Cover Contest sponsored by the Government Documents Round Table of the American Library Association (ALA-GODORT.)

Olson's photo of a U.S. Geological Survey topographic map of Jamestown, NY being held by a hiker on the south shore of Lake Erie depicted on the map -- became the cover photo for the spring issue of DttP.

Entry requirements were that the photo had to be of a local, state, federal or international document being used "in the field."

Congratulations, John!

Her chapter (the first in Part VII: From Library Technology) is entitled; "Technology Skills for the 21st Century."

Congratulations Fantasia!

Otto Spotters

OttoWhere in the Library is Otto? A plush Otto (at right) is circulating throughout the Library. He's given to staff members who are making a difference and a positive contribution. Each employee keeps Otto for a week and then pass him along to another deserving co-worker.

If you spot Otto in the Library, snap a picture and send it, along with details of where you saw him, to libcom@syr.edu. We'll pick one name from all of the "Otto Spotter" submissions to win a prize (winners will be selected using random.org).

Library Suggestions

Tell Us What You Think!Since last month, we've received a number of suggestions and comments from the two-sided suggestion board, located on the first floor of Bird Library, as well as through social media outlets such as the Library's Facebook page and Twitter feed:
  • "The computer is super slow!!! OMG... like a turtle!"
  • "Waiting for this slow computer (sigh)."
  • "First time in a Bird library cubicle. This is my new favorite place on earth... except for the aggressive lack of outlets. Boo."
  • "Student to outlet ratio is horrible!"

If you have a response you'd like us to post, please contact Pamela McLaughlin at pwmclaug@syr.edu.
