Updated University Copyright Portal
|
|
Thanks to our LISD department, especially Cindy Barry, Syracuse University has launched a Copyright Portal that provides educational information to the Syracuse University community about copyright and other laws, policies, and regulations that govern information creation, use, retention and adaptation for scholarly purposes.
The Portal also provides guidance and direction to the University community on issues such as:
- Authorship and protection of scholarship;
- Copyright ownership, including its rights and obligations;
- Limitations and exceptions, such as fair use;
- Licensing of electronic resources and media; and
- Use of copyrighted works
The Portal Blog provides notice and commentary on contemporary issues that routinely affect the University's mission. The blog will be regularly updated with new and older copyright-related information, as well as back filled with important public information that the Library community has shared on e-mail or listservs.
The site also keeps a tally of the last five posts from the @SUCopyright Twitter feed.
Those affiliated with Syracuse University as a current faculty member, student or employee may use the Portal's inquiry form to contact Copyright & Information Policy Adviser, Dr. K. Matthew Dames, or ask questions related to copyright, licensing, open access or the use of information or media.
All the Portal's information is educational.
None of the Portal's information is, or should be considered to be, legal advice.
The Portal is a resource open to all, but targeted toward issues that affect the University. Please feel free to spread news of this resource to faculty and students.
If you have copyright or other intellectual property information you believe is important for the University community, please feel free to send that to kmdames@syr.edu for posting.

Expanded New Books Display
|
|
We now have an expanded version of our new books display on the first floor of Bird. It lives just outside PGSC and is about twice the size of the previous display. It includes comfortable furnishings and more room for new fiction. This new arrangement makes it easier to display books on special topics, too, such as those we just added for Black History Month. The new books space and service is a joint project of Access Services and the Learning Commons. Many thanks to all who helped make this a reality. If you have suggestions, or hear feedback from patrons, let us know!

New Training Website
|
|
Cindy Barry has completed work on a new site for library training information. You can find it at libtraining.syr.edu or access it from the new staff page. Although there are no upcoming classes on the schedule, a "Sample Training Class" has been created that you can enroll in to see how the system works. Log in using your NetID and password to register for courses or manage your registrations. Also, please take a look at the Resources tab on the website -- there are Quick Reference guides, tutorials, and even e-books available to help you with the various Microsoft Office 2010 products. Please let Gerri McCarthy know if you have any questions or comments, or if you have any links to useful training materials you'd like to share on the site.

Freecycling
|
|
What is freecycling?
"To recycle by giving away an item for free"
"A network where people can freely give items to others"
Last June, SULA hosted speakers from SU's Sustainability Division. Among other things, they praised the Library for having a Freecycle bin. Back then, it was located in the LC office , but after a bit of reorganization, we now have room for it near the Waverly entrance. Please keep it in mind if you have good, useable items that aren't too big to fit in the box. Also, take a look for yourself -- there may be something in there you could use! The bin is checked frequently, and items that haven't moved after a short time are cleared out, though most things move fast! Please contact Lesley Pease if you have any concerns or questions.

How is as Important as What
Use reusable silverware and dishes
Meals happen. Regularly. A few times a day on a good day. We know that. Drinks, too. We've been known to have one (or a few...hundred) cups of coffee, tea, water, soda, or juice throughout our day, our week. A vast array of food and drinks are just a stone's throw away from our desks, not to mention what we bring from home. So why do we often forget to have reusable silverware and dishes on hand? We know making good food choices helps keep us healthy, but often forget that good utensil choices help keep the Earth healthy.
For meals you eat at the office, a couple minutes of planning will make your mealtime both environmentally friendly and enjoyable to the senses. There are several staff here who have consciously chosen a beautiful plate, bowl, mug and glass specifically for office meals. The dishes live here, so that eliminates any schlepping back and forth between home and work.
There is a quote attributed to William Morris that says, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." Let's extend that to our offices! Do away with that pile of plastic silverware, paper coffee cups and Styrofoam containers -- instead create an environment that is not only useful and beautiful but sustainable as well.

Otto Spotters
|
|
 Where in the Library is Otto? A plush Otto (at right) is circulating throughout the Library. He's given to staff members who are making a difference and a positive contribution. Each employee keeps Otto for a week and then pass him along to another deserving co-worker.If you spot Otto in the Library, snap a picture and send it, along with details of where you saw him, to libcom@syr.edu. Each month, we'll pick one name from all of the "Otto Spotter" submissions to win a prize (winners will be selected using random.org).
