Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Tips from the Green Team

As you may have noticed, the Library installed new copiers recently. What you may not have known is that these copiers can help the library save money and be kind to the environment.  The main green option now available is the ability to scan and either email a document to someone or load it onto a USB flash drive. You no longer have to print! This feature will be especially useful to students, faculty, and ILL.

And when you do want a paper copy, you could use the double-sided feature to cut down on how much paper you're using.

Orange Pulp Exhibition

If you haven't already done so, take a trip  to the 6th floor and  check out the Orange Pulp exhibit. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase the university's world-class collection of pulp magazines and pulp paintings and to examine pulp culture by re-creating the worlds of the publishers, writers, artists, and readers who promulgated it.  The exhibit, which spans two locations, will be available through the spring semester.

On display in the sixth-floor SCRC gallery are pulp magazines, notably titles like Weird Tales and Amazing Stories; the typescript of Isaac Asimov's "Strange Playfellow," which introduced readers to one of science fiction's best known characters, Robbie the Robot; and correspondence with figures like Ray Bradbury. SUArt Galleries in the Shaffer Art Building is displaying a profile of pulp artist Norman Saunders (1907-1989), including ten lush and dramatic paintings from the university collection. SUArt Galleries is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Gift from Chinese Students and Scholars Association

New artwork graces the stairway between the first and second floors of Bird Library, a gift from the Chinese Students and Scholars Association. The piece was created by Chinese painting legend Wu, Jin-liang. Born in 1954, Mr. Wu graduated from the Jinghua Fine Arts School. He studied at the China Central Academy of Fine Art and with other master calligraphers such as Dong Shouping and Li Feng. Wu's award winning artworks have been widely exhibited and are held by museums in dozens of countries.

The characters, from the Yi Jing (I Ching), are translated as :

The earth's condition is receptive devotion

Thus the superior person who has breadth of character carries the outer world
