Charulata Chawan wins Toastmasters speech contest

Charulata Chawan won the Toastmasters
District 65 Eastern Division Humorous Speech contest with her very funny presentation, "Once upon a shuttle bus."
Charulata will go on to represent the Syracuse/Utica/Rome Toastmasters (and most importantly -- the Orange Orators of Syracuse University!) in the District 65 contest on Saturday, November 13th in Rochester, NY.
This is the first time that the Orange Orators have had a speech contestant achieve this high a level. Please congratulate Charulata on her win and wish her well on the 13th.
The Orange Orators meets every Tuesday from noon - 1 pm in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Guests are always welcome. For more information, see http://cnytoastmasters.org/.

Successful launch of SURFACE
Syracuse University Library hosted a lively party on October 20th to celebrate the launch of SURFACE, our new full-text, multi-media online database that provides access to SU's extensive and diverse array of scholarly, professional, scientific, and creative output. SURFACE is generating a buzz on campus, as it is expected to increase the visibility of authors' works; facilitate interdisciplinary research; maximize research impact;
and provide local, regional, and global communities with immediate and permanent access to these materials. It already contains over 3,000 items, up from just over 2,000 on its launch date! SURFACE was collaboratively planned and implemented by a team of librarians, staff, and students from the Syracuse University Library, the H. Douglas Barclay Law Library, the University Archives, Syracuse University Press, and the iSchool, with advice and consultation from University faculty. For more information, email Charlotte Hess.

The suggestion box that was previously installed in the Learning Commons had to be removed because of a broken lock. We have placed a sign near its former locatation, encouraging people to use the online suggestion box until we receive a replacement. Recent suggestions have included:
- a request for people not to use cell phones in the stacks;
- a compliment on her helpfulness for Eileen DeRycke;
- 2 requests for more quiet seating and more outlets.

Marianne Hanley, David Stokoe, and Peter Verheyen presented an all-day workshop for CLRC at the Cazenovia Public Library on October 15th. Peter presented "Archival 101," an overview of conservation issues facing libraries, cultural organizations, and individuals. He clarified the terminology used in the field and touched on products which can be used in preserving paper-based collections.
Marianne and David discussed the importance of a disaster plan and how libraries and other cultural institutions can create such a plan. Participants had the opportunity to practice real salvaging techniques with wet books. Supplies for the workshop were provided by Gaylord Brothers as part of our new partnership.

Reflecting on a busy summer...
Fall semester is in full swing, and the Library's Summer Programs planning group would like to recap the success of the SummerStart (incoming first year students who begin their transition from high to college in the summer) and Summer College (high school students) Library events. Both groups were interested in having events take place in the Library that would provide students with some planned activities and the opportunity to release some energy. Between playing Twister, the Wii, running around the Library to accomplish our "Quest," and belting out songs on the karaoke machine, releasing energy is exactly what they were able to do! Students from the Summer College program visited the Library twice for "Game Night at the Library" events, when Library staff and Residence Life volunteers set up a number of games including Scattergories, Syracuse Monopoly, Jenga, Twister and more. The karaoke machine and Wii were both a big hit, and the snacks provided gave them the extra energy they needed to make it through the night. The turnout for the first game night was amazing, with around 90 students arriving ready to have fun. The second game night event resulted in a lower number of participants, but the "Library Quest" (a Library scavenger hunt) was a big hit, with around 13 teams participating in hopes of winning one of the great prizes. The event planned for SummerStart was to have had the format of the Library Lock-In, but after receiving feedback from the first group of students, we held a game night with the Library Quest as the main activity for the evening. Students participated in library instruction sessions a few days before the event, so the participating teams were able to put their new skills into practice. Summer College students rated the Library events as one of the activities they enjoyed the most during the summer. Based on this feedback, we plan to repeat these sessions next summer. The planning group would like to thank all of the volunteers: Jim O'Connor, Eli Liquori, Charulata Chawan, Nancy Turner, Richard Ortiz, Gerry McCarthy, Patrick Williams, Jenna Mayotte, Cathy Mulford, Charlie Russo, Niki Gilman, and a special thanks to Lisa Moeckel who arranged the relationship between the Library and the Summer Programs, and for also attending and all three events.
