Staff Profile: Samantha Quell

Samantha Quell is not your typical library intern. She is a pre-professional intern working fifteen hours a week in Preservation and Conservation, gaining experience rather than earning dollars. She has held this role for the past eighteen months, her tenure coming to a close at the end of July. Her appointment has allowed her to acquire hands-on experience in book conservation, a field she hopes to work in upon completing her education. Samantha was born and raised in Syracuse. She attended Henninger High School and later SUNY Oneonta, where she majored in Art History and minored in Chemistry. While at Oneonta, her adviser suggested Samantha check out SUL's conservation lab, having been familiar with its reputation. She contacted Peter Verheyen, Head of Preservation and Conservation, about a possible internship, which is a required experience for those seeking a career in conservation. In the lab, she performs a number of tasks as assigned by Peter and her supervisor David Stokoe, including making boxes for damaged books, creating new covers for old books, and making book repairs. She enjoys the "hands on" aspect of her internship. Sam says, "It's fun to see a book in shambles and then be able to make it usable again. Repairing a book gives me great satisfaction." After completing her internship here, Samantha plans on moving to Buffalo to pursue a Masters in Library Science at University of Buffalo. Her goal is to someday work in preservation specializing in the digitization of rare materials. |
Syracuse University Library to partner with Gaylord Brothers Inc.
Syracuse University Library and Gaylord Brothers, a library supplies vendor, recently entered into a partnership. In the new agreement, Gaylord will give $5,000 to support a post-professional internship in Preservation and Conservation at SUL, and provide funding for the intern to attend the American Institute of Conservation conference. Gaylord will also make a $5,000 in-kind donation. In return, SUL Preservation staff will provide content for Gaylord's new quarterly e-newsletter and be available to answer preservation-related questions raised by Gaylord staff or their customers. Staff will also provide feedback and suggestions on Gaylord's products. Initiated by Peter Verheyen, Head of Conservation and Preservation, who previously worked for Gaylord as an Archival Product Manager, this agreement will allow the Library to hire an intern who will gain valuable conservation experience working with the Library's collections. By participating in the American Institute of Conservation conference, the intern will develop professional connections, learn from presenters, as well as learn about the archival product market by assisting with staffing Gaylord's booth at the conference. Gaylord will benefit by having access to the expertise of the Library's conservation staff. The content the staff will provide for their e-newsletter will focus on general preservation and conservation themes such as environment, storage, disaster preparedness, and adapting products for special needs. Gaylord will also be able to gather feedback from the Library on their new library furniture lines. |
Library employees participate in the
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Corporate Challenge
More than twenty Library employees participated in this year's J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Corporate Challenge held on June 22nd. Rain did not keep away the 507 Syracuse University employees who participated, the largest single team in the race's history!
Making the Library proud were Patrick Williams, Tina Chan, Gabrielle Gosselin, and Elias Liquori who all finished in the SU top fifty with finishing times under 33 minutes. Nice work! |

Sound Beat, the pilot public radio show highlighting the Belfer Archive's vast collection, took to the road recently. Assistant Producer Jim O'Connor traveled to the Old Time Banjo Festival in Virginia to interview the headliner, alum and Grammy nominee Tony Trischka. The interview will be made available as a podcast, and further examines the connection of today's music and Belfer's historic holdings. A fan of Trischka and an aspiring banjo player himself, O'Connor even returned with a souvenir; a new banjo autographed by Trischka.
