SUL staff out and about
Janet Pease and Charlene Martin worked the Library table at this year's Strawberry Festival on June 11th. This annual festival, sponsored by University College and the Department of Recreational Services, invited Syracuse University faculty, staff, and students to "join in the summertime fun" on the quad. This fun included a picnic lunch, strawberry shortcake sundaes available for sale, games and prize giveaways, sidewalk chalk art contests, a two-mile Fun Walk and Run, and a trade show featuring SU departments. Janet and Charlene answered questions about Library services and gave away free goodies. |
Welcome Kate DeVoe!
Kate DeVoe officially joined the Library staff on June 16th as a Technicial Specialist in the Acqusitions/Cataloging department. Kate previously worked for the Library as a student worker.

Library to purchase Verde
The Library plans to purchase Verde, the Electronic Resources Management System (ERM), from ExLibris. Verde is an internal management tool that will help Library staff manage e-resources, including subscriptions to over 400 databases and access to over 22,000 electronic journal titles. Verde will assist in the trial, acquisition, cataloging, management, presentation, and 24/7 access to these e-resources.
For more information on Verde, email Roberta Gwilt. |
GIS lab and staff receive high praise
Graduate student Hong Anh Vu recently submitted a kind note via the online Library Suggestion Box in appreciation of the GIS lab facilities and the support he has received from the GIS staff. A copy of this note is below.
"I write to let you know how much I appreciate the facilities in the GIS lab on the third floor. The lab has not only provided high speed computers with flat screen that make writing far more enjoyable, the programs available for processing data, designing maps and charts and color printers make my work so much easier and more fun. Above all, I am also grateful to the staff supervising the lab for their guidance and hospitality. I do not know yet where I will be heading after graduation, but I already know that I will miss the people as well as the facilities of the GIS lab. Please extend my gratitude to the staff. I will be missing you. Yours sincerely, Hong Anh Vu

Green tip of the month: save paper by setting default margins in Microsoft Word
This is a "you do-it-once and it'll do-it-forever" way to board the green wagon: change your default page margin setting in Microsoft Word. Doing this one thing reduces paper use by as much as 20%. The average person prints 9.4 pages from Word documents a day. Over the course of a year that results in 686.2 pages less printed per person.
Here's how to change your setting: Open Microsoft Word and go to the Page Layout tab, then click Margins.
At the bottom of the Margins drop-down menu choose Custom Margins.
Set your margins to .75 inches.
Click the "Default" button in the lower left.
Click "Yes" when asked if you want to change the default settings for page setup.
Any future documents you create will use the new setting. You can apply this to documents you've already created as well. This tip helps when having to print received documents like meeting agendas that have larger margins. Oh, the paper you'll save! As always, you can get more tips and resources at the Green Library Team's web site at researchguides.library.syr.edu/greenlibrary.
Thanks to the Green Library Team, who provide advice on how to work in a more environmentally conscious way. These "green tips" are a regular staff newsletter feature to help us all be more green. |

Campus parking maps are now available for those looking for the most environmentally friendly and economically sound way to help patrons navigate their way around campus. These maps come in a tear off packet and are available upon request by contacting Kathleen White.
All are encouraged to hand out these maps rather than providing patrons with the map located on the back of the Library's Welcome Booklet.

Summertime brings warmer weather (hypothetically), delayed sunsets, and, of course, construction. Those of us who use the Waverly entrance get a front row seat to the action. Here's a different view that you might find interesting, courtesy of John Olson.
