Lisa Moeckel, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Librarian Personnel Administrator, recently announced the 2010 Promotion Committee. This committee is a peer review group that makes recommendations regarding librarians' promotions.

This year, the committee consists of librarians John Olson, Michael Pasqualoni, Melinda Dermody, Janet Pease, and Suzanne Preate.

For more information, email Lisa Moeckel.
Calling all volunteers!     Blankets for Haiti

In partnership with the Office of First Year and Transfer Programs and Residence Life, the Library is looking for volunteers to help with the 2010 student move-in on August 25-26. Syracuse Welcome volunteers greet families as they arrive, provide them with information, and act as ambassadors for the University.

Our intention is to show students and their families that the Library is there for them by having a Library volunteer for every move-in shift at every residence hall. Library volunteers will also have giveaways for students to entice them to come to the Library once they have settled.

If you would like to volunteer, email Lisa Moeckel.

For more information on the shifts available, visit http://orientation.syr.edu/volunteers/

Staff Profile: Kelley Parker
 Blankets for Haiti

Kelley Parker joined the Library in December 2009 as the Assistant to the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian. In this role, she manages Dean Thorin's schedule and travel, provides administrative support for her meetings and appointments, and helps manage Library events, among other responsibilities.

Kelley is a native Central New Yorker, born and raised in the Central Square-Brewerton area. Before coming to the Library, Kelley worked as a legal secretary for the Hiscock & Barclay law firm in Syracuse. There, she worked for a tax and corporate attorney assisting in the creation and dissolution of corporations and LLCs and estate planning.

When Kelley saw the job posting on syr.edu, she knew the position was perfect for her. "I always wanted to work in a library. I love reading and have always felt at home in the library." When asked what she likes most about her new position, she said that she really enjoys working for Dean Thorin. She also enjoys the collegiate atmosphere.

Outside of work, Kelley likes to spend time traveling and reading (her favorites are mystery and historical suspense novels). In her free time, she and her husband Kevin enjoy visiting historical sites such as presidential birth places and civil war sites. Kelley and Kevin are also members of the Order of the Eastern Star, an organization for women and men who practice the principals of charity, truth and loving kindness by dedicated service to their communities and their members. Like other Masonic organizations, the Order of the Eastern Star uses emblems and symbolism to teach moral lessons that encourage members to make their lives more useful to both themselves and others.

Kelley's desk is located outside Dean Thorin's office in Library Administration. If you haven't met her already, stop by and say hello!
Green tip of the month: look to others for inspiration

Harvard University and Colgate University have built voluntary green office programs with the interest and enthusiasm of staff members. They award informal certification (Leaf; Oak Leaf) for participants based on checklists of "green" criteria.

Both of these programs offer excellent suggestions on their web sites for using less energy and creating less waste in office settings. Included are tips for increasing recycling efforts, saving energy, and reducing waste. Harvard's site offers do-it-yourself information for anyone interested in getting started with such a program.
For more information, see:

The Green Library Team is always looking for green suggestions, tips, and resources that you may have come across. While we're working to increase recycling and other green practices in our library spaces, we're also very interested in exchanging and sharing resources with you. Send your green tidbits to any of our members (Tasha Cooper, Michele Combs, Tom House, Tom Keays, Eli Liquori, Suzanne Preate, Penelope Singer and Virginia Strauch) so we can include them on our web site or in a future article here.

As always, you can get more tips and resources at the Green Library Team's web site at researchguides.library.syr.edu/greenlibrary.
Library staff participate in LGBT Art and Activism Project

On March 28th, the LGBT Resource Center held an "Art-In" with artist Amy Bartell to create art with an activist twist. The participants created over 50 bullhorns with LGBT-affirming messages that are displayed on the quad this week, prior to the National Day of Silence on April 16th.  Following the "Art-in", the LGBT Resource Center invited the campus community to decorate the bullhorns and Bonnie Ryan, Lesley Pease and Cathy Mulford participated. They had a great time bringing out their inner artist by decorating a bullhorn or two.

MGI Department hosts baby shower

 MGI Baby Shower

On St. Patrick's Day afternoon, "Erin Go Brahs" gave way to "Oohs!" and "Ahhs!" on the third floor, as current and former members of the MGI Department hosted a baby shower for a member of their "family."

Guest of honor, Millia Alamir, came to Syracuse from Syria when her husband, Habib, accepted a position in SU's Energy and Computing Management Department. Millia had been a practicing dentist in her native country, but must complete a series of tests and courses in the United States before being accredited here. To that end, she became a fixture on the third floor, studying arduously for the first intense medical exam, putting in 6-7 hours daily, at least five days a week. MGI staff got to know her and encouraged her, as she pressed on. She passed that one with flying colors! Millia returned to us to prepare for the next test with exciting news: she was pregnant! Of course, she passed that test, too!

With those two tests behind her, and now six months pregnant, she was ready to slow down and prepare for her baby. As her Syracuse family, we were ready to gear up for a baby shower in her honor. We invited her to a "Spring Break Party" on March 17th, and she was both surprised and delighted when she walked into the MGI office to discover the "Party" was in her honor.

Needless to say, we can't wait until little Yara (yes, they know it's a girl!) - due on April 22nd - also joins the family - both the Alamir family, and the Library's family.
