New Column -- Staff Profile
Want to learn more about your colleagues? Nominate one of them for our new Staff Profile column. Each issue will feature an up close and personal view of one of our most interesting staff members. To nominate someone, send an email to libcom@syr.edu.
Donna Sullivan
Donna was a natural choice for our first profile since she recently won the Distinguished Service Award -- recognition from her peers for a job well done.
Donna Sullivan is known in the Library as "someone who gets the job done". She has worked in the Library for eight and half years in various capacities. Initially, she worked in Reference as an Office Supervisor, managing student workers and bargaining unit staff. She loved working with students and interacting with patrons in Reference. Her current position is Unit Coordinator for Research, Collection and Scholarly Communication. In this role, she manages the department infrastructure and works closely with librarians and bibliographers on various projects. She particularly enjoys working on anything having to do with collections.
Not only is Donna a hard worker who gets things done, she is a person that believes the Library can, and will, do better. To this end, she helped form a committee to assist in the planning for the Research Support Center, a part of the Library's master plan proposed for the third floor of the Library. She and other committee members are consulting with faculty members, librarians, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure this new research floor is a success. She believes everyone will benefit by engaging these individuals in the planning process.
Outside of work, Donna says she spends "an amazing amount of her spare time" at high school sporting events cheering on her son and daughter who play soccer, football, basketball, and lacrosse for Jordan Elbridge High School. She also enjoys gardening, cross stitching, and renovating her 160 old year house. |

"Sound Beat" will be distributed free to public radio stations worldwide in an effort to promote both Belfer's holdings and the University in general.
Welcome Jim! |

He will return to the University on March 2nd to give a gallery talk at 5 p.m. on the sixth floor of Bird Library. Click here for more information on the exhibit. |
Green Library Team's tip of the month
Thanks to the Green Library Team, who offered to provide advice on how to work in an more environmentally conscious way. These "green tips" will now be a regular feature here to help us all be more green. Tip #1: Reduce Email Bloat Remove non-essential replies & forwards If you've ever printed an email only to have an extra 12 pages of replies or forwards spew out along with the one page you really did want, you know the frustration of "email bloat." Sometimes the trail of conversation is important for the context of the message, but oftentimes it's not. This email bloat not only wastes paper, but it also wastes energy. The larger the email sent, the more energy is expended in sending it. It's not just on your end that there's an energy savings, but also on all the computers the message has to travel through to reach its final destination. So before you hit "Send," delete anything non-essential. The person you send the message to will thank you and so will the Earth. For more tips and resources, visit the Green Library Team's page at researchguides.library.syr.edu/greenlibrary. |
5th Annual Library Lock-in
Mark your calendars! The Library's annual library lock-in will take place Friday, February 26th, from 10 p.m.to 1 a.m. This is the fifth time the Library has collaborated with Residence Life on this event that invites students to participate in a night of fun in the Library. Last year's event attracted fifty undergraduate students who participated in competitions using Library resources and enjoyed refreshments, raffle prizes, music, and games.
Tina Chan and Abby Kasowitz-Scheer are looking for Library staff to join the fun this year, including volunteers to help prepare for the event, as well as people to help the night of the event. If you are interested, please email Tina Chan or Abby Kasowitz-Scheer. |

Student shares her wedding day with Library staff
The bride was radiant in her gown as she marched down the aisle...to the Map Room! MGI workstudy student Jennifer "Jenny" Keller married William "Will" Arndt in a private ceremony at the Syracuse Court House on Friday, December 18, 2009. Soon afterward, the happy couple, the bride's mother, and the groom's parents made their way to the third floor of the Library, to share their happiness with her MGI family. Current and former MGI staffers were anxiously awaiting their arrival, having prepared an informal celebration for the newlyweds. Jenny, a Junior Geography Major from Mohrsville, PA, works as a maps assistant. Therefore, it was only natural that she pose for some wedding photos with members of her Library family among our Map Collection. Somehow between classes, final projects, exams, and work study obligations, Jenny, an accomplished seamstress, found time not only to make her own wedding gown, but Will's tux, too! |
Congratulations Nick Nosko!
