Moeckel, Williams present at WNY/O ACRL fall conference Lisa Moeckel, Patrick Williams, and Noreen Gaubatz, Assistant Director of SU's Office of Institutional Research and Assessment presented a session entitled "New Approaches to Teaching Information Literacy in Writing Program Classes at Syracuse University" at the fall meeting of the Western New York/Ontario Chapter of ACRL in November.
The session, which was very well received, focused on the Library's transition from face-to-face to online instruction for Writing Program 105 and 205 classes. Presenters reported on several simultaneous strategies that SU librarians are implementing to deliver information literacy instruction within the context of a newly reorganized library, including
the development of a modular set of instructional tutorials and teaching materials for writing instructors to deploy in their classes; a new emphasis on sharing and supporting responsibility for teaching certain information literacy skills;
providing opportunities for professional development and web-based tools to "train the trainers"; and new approaches to using library space in support of Writing Program information literacy instruction.
They also presented information on piloting the program and their use of feedback from focus groups to revise and augment the instructional module and inform other instructional strategies.

SCRC and SU Archives credited in Maxwell Perspective story about SU's Lincoln sculpture
SCRC and SU Archives recently contributed to A Different Lincoln, the feature story in the fall 2009 edition of Maxwell Perspective. Author Dana Cooke credits Nicolette Dobrowolski, SU Library Special Collections Research Center, and Mary O'Brien, SU Archives, for their extensive research assistance.
The story talks about the Abraham Lincoln statue by James Earle Fraser that resides outside Maxwell Hall. Syracuse University owns the only full-sized bronze duplicate of the statue, the original being in Jersey City, New Jersey. In the article, Cooke talks about Fraser's work, his inspiration for the piece, and he attempts to clarify how the statue came to SU (some details still remain unknown).
Syracuse University retains the world's most extensive collection of Fraser materials and may be accessed by visiting SCRC.

SU Magazine's new "University Treasures" series highlights SCRC
Syracuse University Magazine, in collaboration with the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), is now profiling selections from SCRC's holdings in an ongoing series entitled "University Treasures." This series began in the Fall/Winter 2009 edition with "Thunderstorm and Tree, Wyoming,"a sliver gelatin print by Howard Bond (see below).
The series offers a great opportunity for the University community to glimpse into SCRC's collections and encourage readers to discover more treasures by visiting SCRC both online and on the sixth floor.

Save the words, and have fun too!
Here's an interesting site for those who love words:
http://savethewords.org
Savethewords.org is an interactive website powered by Oxford Dictionaries that was created in an effort to keep underused English language words in the dictionary. Regularly, lexiographers analyze the frequency of word usage in popular culture and media to decide which words will be added to the dictionary. They also track the falling popularity of words to recommend their removal from the dictionary. This site is an effort to save these rarely used words from extinction.
Savethewords.org invites users to scroll over a sea of rare words that literally call out for attention. Once a word is clicked, its definition and a sentence using that word appears.
The site is a fun way to learn new words while rediscovering old ones, and it provides an opportunity to save the words by adopting a word, pledging to use it as often as you can. There is an option to register for a "word a day" email from Oxford as well.
Scroll around and pick out your favorite!

Holiday giving update
Bird Library's 2009 holiday sharing program exceeded expectations this year providing eleven boxes of gifts and food, as well as a gift certificate and a Walmart gift card, for a mother and her six children. Gerri McCarthy said this year's program proved to be very successful because of the generosity of Library employees and thanks all those who participated. Campus wide, the holiday sharing program benefitted 56 local families.
The United Way team would also like to thank Library staff for their support of this year's campaign. Dorcas McDonald said all contributions were greatly appreciated, whether they were contributions of time, money, or talent. The money raised by the Library will help fund vital services United Way supports in our community for the less fortunate. |
Richard Coombs in the news
