Learning Commons News

The Learning Commons now circulates webcams and headsets for use with Skype and other tools. They are available to SU students, faculty or staff at the LC desk. The loan period is 2 hours.

Skype software has been installed on library public workstations and can be used for making free video and voice calls to other Skype users. It can also be used to connect (for a fee) to mobile phones and landlines.
Web Site Release Timetable

The new Library website with Encore as the search tool is now scheduled to be available on July 28th. A link to the old site will remain live for a limited time following the cutover. The official Go Live date for general release to campus is August 25th.

For additional information on the website upgrade, please contact DeAnn Buss at x2977.  For more on Encore, contact TC Carrier at x8546.

Periodicals, Reference Collections  Relocated

The current periodicals collection was recently relocated to the NE side of the second floor, in the area between Room 200 (Access Services) and Room 210 (Librarians' Office). The reference collection is being reconstituted in the space vacated by current periodicals.

For more information about the reference collection project,
contact Tasha Cooper.
4,000 Years and Counting Exhibition

Special Collections has installed a new exhibition, 4,000 Years and Counting, in the exhibit case on the first floor. It is something of a "greatest hits" of special collections show, and includes items similar to those that Dean Thorin and David Murray have taken on their Road Shows to cities around the country. The goal is to entice visitors, including library staff, to come to the sixth floor and view the originals.

Special thanks to David Stokoe, Nicolette Dobrowolski, Will La Moy
, and Penelope Singer, who each applied their skills to this project.
SUL Joins NACO Music Project

Syracuse University Library has joined the Library of Congress NACO Music Project (NMP), following an extensive application process coordinated by Charles Tremper, Sarah Theimer, and Mary Laverty.
In his letter of invitation, NMP Coordinator Ralph Papakhian of Indiana University stated, "The Committee was very impressed by the application you submitted and pleased with the strengths that you bring to this work."

NACO is the Name Authority component of the
Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging. NACO Music Project participants are nationally recognized experts in music cataloging and contribute name and name/uniform title authority records to the LC Name Authority File. The application required a month-long self study to estimate the number of name and name/uniform title headings SUL might contribute on a monthly basis.

NMP is sponsored by the Music OCLC Users Group. For more information about this project, please contact Charles Tremper.
Library and iSchool host Scholarly Communication Colloquium

What does the contemporary landscape of scholarly communication look like?  How does the University disseminate the knowledge generated by its scholars?
How does the tenure process influence research and publication patterns? What impact is the Open Access movement having on these processes? What is the Library's role in collecting and preserving the knowledge created by the University for future generations of scholars?

These are a few of the questions addressed at the inaugural Scholarly Communication and the Future of Research Colloquium on April  16th, organized by the Syracuse University Library and the iSchool.  The forty librarians, faculty members, graduate students, and staff in attendance engaged in a wide-ranging discussion, exploring the changing landscape of scholarly communication and generating action items and topics for a new colloquium series being planned for the fall.

For a complete report on the meeting or more information on plans for the fall, contact Patrick Williams.

Staff News

New Baby!: Advancement and Communications Specialist Kathleen White and husband John welcomed their son Jack Thomas White into the world on June 12th. They are now happily ensconced at home and getting to know one another. There is still time to drop off a card at her desk in Admin and we'll put a package together for delivery.

Degree awarded: Bevan Angier completed her MLIS/CAS in Digital Libraries in December 2008. Congratulations on your accomplishment, Bevan!

Library Bowling Team: Paul Bern, Sue Ehlers, Randy Money and David Balfoort were the regular season champions for the 08/09 season.  The season is split into halves and the team won both halves.  The "Most Improved Bowler Award" went to David, with Paul a very close second.  The team continued its winning ways at the end of the season "no tap" tournament.  No tap allows a bowler to record a strike if they knock down 9 or 10 pins on the first ball.  This allows a bowler to laugh at the one pin that has frustrated them throughout the season. Much laughter was had as a team, with David taking the individual title as well. The end of the year banquet was catered by the Dinosaur BBQ and a good time was had by all.  Bowling balls are now safely  housed in the deep recesses of our closets and won't see the light of day till September when we'll begin our title defense. For more information on the league, which meets Tuesdays @ 4:45, Sept. through April, contact David Balfoort.
