New Website with Encore
Syracuse University Library
will launch a redesigned website with a new search tool during summer 2009. The
website will have a completely new look and will include Encore, a new search
tool for the library catalog and other resources. Encore is intuitive and user
friendly and will enable users to locate information much more easily than in
the past. Encore presents search results
by Date, Author, Language, Subject, Location, Format, Tags, and other
parameters. When a user enters a search term and they are not sure where to go
next, Encore will provide suggestions for next steps.
To explore how other academic libraries are already using
Encore, see: University at Binghamton; University at Nebraska Lincoln ;
and Eastern University at Kentucky
SU Library has purchased the most up to date version of Encore that is currently
available, so some features in our implementation may be somewhat different
from the above sites.
The new website will be brought up in
phases. On July 1, the new website with Encore will be made available in a
test environment. We encourage all Library staff to explore and become familiar
with its features during this trial period.
Based on feedback, w
e will continue to fine tune it.
On July 15th,
the new Library website will replace the current Library website (at
library.syr.edu). A link to the previous
website will be available for a limited time. User testing will continue and
additional refinements made throughout this period.
The official Go Live date is August 25th. For those responsible for developing
instruction sessions for the fall semester, we plan for the site to be fairly
stable beginning by August 1st and additional enhancements to be
relatively few.
For additional information on the website upgrade, please
contact DeAnn Buss at x2977 or dmbuss@syr.edu. For more on Encore, contact TC Carrier at
x8546 or tecarrie@syr.edu or Sarah
Theimer at x9777 or shtheime@syr.edu.

Have you met Mr. Shrinkwrap yet?
The Department of Preservation and Conservation introduced their newest "staff member", Mr. Shrinkwrap, on April 3rd at an informal meet and greet where Library staff could see how the machine operates. Mr. Shrinkwrap is a complete shrink wrapping system that protects Library materials, especially those bound for off-site storage, by wrapping the items in tight fitting film. Titles and barcodes can be read through the wrapping, allowing them to be easily identifiable while in storage. Mr. Shrinkwrap saves the Library money on conservation costs, and it prevents damage to the items while they are not in use.
For more information on Mr. Shrinkwrap, please contact Peter Verheyen at 443-9756 or pdverhey@syr.edu |
Charters' Scholars Visit
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) is in the second year of awarding the Alexander N. Charters
Adult Education Research Grants-in-Aid. The first of three 2009 grant
recipients, Waynne
B. Jaymes, professor of adult education at the University of South Florida, arrived in mid-March-with five of her doctoral students.
Normally, scholarly research is a solitary endeavor. But in this
case, James and her students formed a team to write a history of the
Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) from 1955 to 1965. They will
present their research this fall at a conference of the
American Association for Adult and Continuing Education.
Among the adult education
organizations whose papers are housed in SCRC's Charters Library of Resources
for Educators of Adults, the CPAE is particularly important. According to
James, "Teaching adults is uniquely different from teaching children;
therefore, there is the need for a body of knowledge unique to working with
adult learners. The CPAE allows professors to improve their practices by
sharing their knowledge and skills with each other."
With James orchestrating their efforts, the team spent a
week reviewing "a vast amount of materials" in search of documentation on CPAE.
In that process, the students gained experience working with archives,
history, and research methods. Three of the
students hope to become professors. Another, who will return to the Army as a
physician's assistant (PA), hopes one day to teach at the Army's training
school for PAs. The fifth student, new to her doctoral program, will help James
incorporate adult education history into an online course.

Don't miss the I + ID exhibition! Have you noticed anything different in the lower level of the Learning Commons these days? Currently installed is an exhibition of 5th year thesis and other works by Industrial and Interaction Design students. The exhibition was kicked off by a reception on April 17th, 2009 and will run until May 10th. If you missed the reception, you can view pictures and video from the event by clicking the following links (thank you, Pamela Thomas!):

Be sure to visit the exhibition before it's too late! |
LC News The Learning Commons is happy to announce the addition of 40 outlets on the east and west sides of the first floor. This is in response to requests from students who asked for more outlets to recharge their electronic items, such as their laptops.
Speaking of laptops, the Learning Commons has seen a dramatic increase in laptop circulation. In March alone, the LC desk circulated laptops 2,577 times! This is in comparison to 1,412 circulations in March 2008. |
