Learning Commons Update
How
might the library proceed with building a Learning Commons in this challenging
budgetary climate? How can we ensure that we're creating spaces that engage and
support our students? One way is to partner with COLAB!
We've
engaged Chris McCray (VPA and COLAB faculty) and his students to assist us in
creating attractive and responsive spaces, beginning with the lower level in
Bird. We now have purple walls (which match our pink granite pillars nicely)
and will soon see portraits on the large pieces of homasote where the compact
shelving was just a few weeks ago. Many of the students will actually create
their paintings in that area, so we'll be able to witness the creative process.
Chris is also advising us on converting a portion of the former media services
area into a quiet reading room that will open after spring break. This quiet
space will address one of the most common requests from our students.
Chris
shares the learning commons "green" vision of reducing and reusing. We are
exploring ways to reuse the old furniture that has been stacked up in the
loading dock hallway or used in other areas of the library. As one example,
we'll shorten the legs on one of the big wooden tables and test it out.
For
the first floor, we will place workstations and furniture in the center area (now
surrounded by caution tape) as soon as we get the okay from campus planning
officials.
Two other campus partners are pleased with their
new locations in the library. The Tutoring and Study Center has their satellite
area just outside room 123, and the Academic Integrity office relocated their office
to the lower level in Bird.

New Library Graphic Identity
Syracuse
University Library now has a new look! The Library has recently developed the new graphic identity -- seen in the header above -- to replace the
previous logotype.
Coinciding with the Syracuse University Campaign identity,
this new graphic will be used on all Library publications, correspondence, and on the new website. It will
appear on all materials published by the Library for both internal and external
communications.
The
new logo was created by graphic designers
Lynn Hoppel from the Syracuse University Press and Penelope Singer from Bird Library. Stationery with the new logo has been
produced using 100% recycled paper and vegetable ink. Library departments can
obtain a supply of the new stationery by contacting Kathleen White, kswhite@syr.edu. Templates
for online communication are under development and will be available soon.

Grants and Gifts
The Library received a $20,000 gift from alumnus Marc
Siegle to establish a fund in honor of Vincent "Ted" D'Amato. Proceeds will be used to enhance SCRC collections
related to the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti.
We are also grateful to alumnus Carl Armani for another
noteworthy gift -- the complete works of photographer Howard Bond, who studied with Ansel Adams, Imogen
Cunningham, and Brett Weston. This remarkable collection represents the 35-year chronology of Bond's career, which
Armani describes as "a progressive voyage of his growth as a photographer
and his skill in capturing black and white tonal qualities." Sean
Quimby is working with an MFA photography student to curate an exhibition scheduled
for this coming fall.

Obama Biographer visits SUL
Washington Post staff writer David Maraniss spent a good part of Presidents' Week on the third floor of Bird Library, immersed in the Kenya Archive microfilm. He is hard at work on a new book about the Obama family, which he described as " a biography of family and place. " The book begins in Kenya, his father's birthplace, and covers Obama's life in Kansas, Indonesia, Hawaii, and Chicago. The book will be published by Simon and Schuster and is due out in late 2011. Thanks to Bonnie Ryan for the introduction!
