We're fortunate at The Cecil Group to have a lot of new, interesting projects in the office, but we're particularly excited about being designated as the planning firm for Boston's Fairmount Indigo Corridor Study, the BRA's largest planning study to date. Other new work include a master plan for a private college in Maine and a private high school in Massachusetts, form-based code development in Claremont, NH, a strategic plan for one of Norwood's business districts, streetscape design in Framingham, an urban renewal plan for Weymouth and a main street livability plan for Woonsocket, RI. Highlights Later this month, Principal Steve Cecil will be headed to Houston to lay the foundation for 5500+ Starbucks employees to help transform Houston's Fifth Ward. Learn more about that effort below.
We're continuing our success in developing urban renewal plans. Our last one for Salem, MA was just recognized by Historic Salem.
The Cecil Group was playing with chalk last month. This is our 3rd year participating in the BSA's Chalk One Up with Sidewalk Sam fundraiser. We have some fantastic photos to share with you below.
Thanks to everyone who visited us at the Power of Place Summit in Rhode Island. If you missed it, we traded handmade artisan chocolates for ideas on how to make Rhode Island grow. Here's an image of the amazing idea board we put together for the event.
Get ready to hear from us more often. We've decided that quarterly is just too little to keep our readers up to date on news in the firm. Starting now, Plan Views will become a bi-monthly publication. Look for our next issue in your inbox in mid-September.

At Work and Play in Houston
This October, a team of 5500+ international Starbucks employees will descend on Houston's Fifth Ward and undertake a massive revitalization of the neighborhood's main 22-block corridor, Lyons Avenue. The design work for this program is one part of a larger design charrette later this month, led by Steven Cecil, Founding Principal of The Cecil Group, who was tapped by the AIA to assemble and lead a team of experts as part of the AIA's Regional and Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT) program.
In preparation of the event, The Cecil Group has been gathering a team of experts from across the country to take part in a four-day charette in Houston during the last week of July. The team is made up of architects, planners, designers, renderers and economists who will all bring their specific expertise to the project. Over the course of four days, the team will meet with the local community, neighborhood stakeholders, politicians and local agencies to plan the changes necessary to reinvigorate the community.
With most of the team assembled, The Cecil Group will be busy coordinating everyone's efforts before the team visit to Houston. Check back in our next issue of Plan Views to learn about the team and the outcome of the charrette.

Honored: Salem Urban Renewal Plan
Historic Salem, Inc. awarded the Salem Redevelopment Authority a 2012 Preservation Award for the Salem Downtown Renewal Plan. The Cecil Group worked with the SRA to develop this plan, updating the two original urban renewal plans for downtown Salem and adding expanded design standards and guidelines more appropriate to today's understanding of urban renewal. Historic Salem's award demonstrates that historic preservation and urban renewal are not mutually exclusive, and that the strengths of both approaches can be combined to maintain an active, successful downtown over the next few decades.

Chalking One Up with Sidewalk Sam
The Cecil Group enjoyed its annual tradition of participating in Common Boston's Chalk One Up with Sidewalk Sam. Our team enjoyed a sunny day out on Dewey Square in Boston chalking out our take on this year's theme - Off the Grid. Kudos to the firm's graphic designer, Jerald Kohrs, who came up with the design. View more photos here.
