Plan Views from The Cecil Group |
From the Editor It's been a while since you last heard from us, and we're sorry we haven't been in touch as much as we should be. Luckily, the reason for our lapse is out of pure busyness. Since we've last spoken we've added two new landscape architects to our team, Brandon Kunkel who comes to us from DLR Group and Michael Kluchman, a former Cecil Group employee who worked on the Central Artery Master Plan and Falmouth Streetscape project, as well as a new Urban Planner, Eunice Kim. We've all been working together for many months now and the new energy they've brought to our team is amazing, as I'm sure those of you who have had a chance to work with them will agree.
Last week, Steve Cecil was invited to participate in a workshop on making our cities and towns more pedestrian friendly. This DHCD sponosored workshop had a great turnout and we enjoyed working with DHCD, WalkBoston and Nelson/Nygaard to pull it together. This week Steve is in Houston with a group of colleagues from the AIA. You can read below about his trip last year to Santa Rosa.
Next month The Cecil Group will be at the Power of Place Summit with GrowSmartRI. We'll be sending out invites to our booth soon, but until then start thinking of great ways to get Rhode Island growing.

At Work and Play in Santa Rosa
This past summer, Principal Steve Cecil had the wonderful opportunity to spend a three day working vacation in Santa Rosa after being invited to serve on a national team to assist the California community in their ambitions to transform a 3-mile corridor of land into a model of sustainability. The corridor had once been planned for a highway project which has since been abandoned. Steve served as both the architect and landscape architect on the team that worked closely with the community and stakeholders, crafting a vision and strategy to create an innovative greenway surrounded by urban neighborhoods.
The design strategy provides an array of urban agriculture opportunities, bikeways, pathways and community parks. A groundwater management system is proposed that will channel natural water sources through the corridor to provide the sustainable irrigation that will allow vineyards, fruit orchards and community gardens to flourish.
As a part of its community service orientation, the AIA assembles teams of architects and other professionals to create strategies for improving the sustainability of cities. The Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) program matches experts with challenges that are brought to the AIA by communities throughout the nation. More information on the SDAT program and the report of the Santa Rosa "charrette" can be found here.

Honored: Two New Planning Awards Grace the Walls at The Cecil Group
This past December, Principals Steve Cecil and Ken Buckland, along with Associate Josh Fiala attended the Massachusetts Chapter APA Awards luncheon where two Cecil Group projects received awards. We were honored to have our work in Marlborough on the city's Economic Development Master Plan awarded a Planning Project award, and our years of successful community revitalization work as part of the Department of Housing and Community Development's Massachusetts Downtown Initiative program awarded a Comprehensive Planning award. We share both these awards with the many other firms and individuals that made this work a reality.

The Cecil Group is excited to have a booth this year at the Power of Place Summit (see video above for more information on the conference). We're thinking up fun ways to engage our fellow colleagues at the conference so make sure to stop by and say hello.
