Plan Views
from The Cecil Group
While June brought us gray skies and rain we're hopeful that July and August will continue to be kinder. And with three new, very large windows we'll be enjoying the view (and the sunshine) even more from the 5th floor of our Fort Point office. Speaking of our office, the number one question we receive from our firm friends is "when do I get to see your new space?" To this we say soon. Keep your eyes open for a party invitation to help us celebrate our new space. We have a little more construction to make it through before we set the date.
Improving Sustainability through Landscapes
In the May 2009 issue of New England Planning, Cecil Group Principal Ken Buckland gives an overview on how The Green Factor, a program to evaluate landscapes, can help projects achieve greater sustainability. Click here to read the article.

Since the publishing of the article, Norwalk, CT whom we developed sustainability guidelines for has adopted the Green Factor program.
Port Canaveral
Sketching Up the Future
Utilizing three-dimensional models is a powerful tool for communicating design ideas. One model that we're particularly proud of is the model (pictured above) created for Port Canaveral in Cape Canaveral, Florida and used in a presentation to graphically portray our recommendations.

The Cecil Group is planning for mixed-use development for the Port, which includes a range of recreational, fishing, restaurant, retail and hospitality uses. An early stage project will be a maritime museum and visitors center.

The three-dimensional model allowed the stakeholders, community members and others to experience the proposed development through a series of fly-through animations. Everyone left the presentation with a better understanding of the project goals and how the plan would help the Port to realize them.
Steve Cecil Speaks on Town/Gown Relationships in New Jersey
This spring Steve Cecil had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion titled Higher Education Institutions: Is there a role for them in your downtown? The panel discussion was part of Downtown New Jersey's annual conference. Being at the forefront of negotiating the often adversarial relationships between towns and the institutions that reside within them, Steve was able to provide his insights on how both towns (and cities) and their local institutions can develop mutually beneficial relationships which allow each to obtain its goals in tandem with the other.
The Cecil Group and CommonBoston
ChalkOneUp We were in full participation mode for this year's CommonBoston Weekend as The Cecil Group continues to embrace its new neighborhood. CommonBoston's weekend celebrated four neighborhoods including Fort Point. We participated (and were named 2nd favorite) in the ChalkOneUp with Sidewalk Sam event, members from the firm attended the dParty next door at our colleague's office, Thompson Design, and we opened our firm to visitors during the Open Studios Tour.
