CCI Talks Programming
In the past few months Control Concepts has been working on a number of exciting projects and has had the pleasure of writing for Crestron as the first Guest Blogger in its new Guest Blogging Series and as a blogger for Commercial Integrator. This has allowed us to start the dialogue about topics that are important for our customers and partners, including the relationship between manufacturers and control systems programmers and the challenges and opportunities that come with new technology and new product development.
The advent of configurable systems, which we discussed in our last newsletter, begs the question, where does the control systems programmer fit in? What are the limitations of configuration and how does programming differ when it comes to what the customer sees and how products function?

Here is a quick teaser on our thoughts about Programming vs. Configurable Systems:
The distinctions between programming and configuring present benefits and challenges. Call it what you may, the bottom line that rings true for both is the need to define and understand system requirements. Whether it’s Programming or Configuring, it is essential to have the ability to determine, define, and implement system functionality appropriate for the user that satisfies the terms of the project specification.
The challenge in completing any control system project is the ability to provide a solution that is reliable, easy to use, feature-rich, and well thought-out. It doesn’t matter if you plan to Program or Configure your system, the task is the same for both. If you are unclear on what you want your system to do and how to spell it out on a button-by-button basis, it will be just as difficult to Configure as to Program and obtaining a successful solution will be no more likely.
Programming is necessary when we need to provide more customization like specific interface design or graphical requirements, two-way device communication, highly automated functionality and other complex features.
If a system is more straightforward, demands less complex functionality, and needs to be completed quickly and cheaply, configuration is a solution
The bottom line is that understanding the commonalities and differences between programming and configuration and knowing a customer’s needs has the greatest impact on the success of the project and its profitability.
