Wildlife Pond from the Air

Beaver Brook Association began with an 18 acre plot of land and a quiet love of nature by the founders.  Today it has grown to over 2,000 acres.  The most recent acquisition was the addition of the Whaleback property, 80 beautiful, wooded acres that we recently acquired in a fast-paced fundraising effort.  The closing took place on March 31 and soon a conservation  easement will guarantee that it will never be developed.  What a wonderful addition to our "outdoor classroom".

While our land is our biggest physical asset, our real treasure is our staff and our volunteers.  They are the people who make it all happen.  Nine full and part-time staffers get help from our 200 volunteers.  The quiet, unassuming love of nature by our founders is manifested now in the efforts of both thesBBA staff chambere groups with such people as Peter Smith who joined us in the spring of 1975 as our Natural Resource Manager. Pete manages our woodlots and does countless other tasks relating to boundaries and land management.  His knowledge of our facilities is absolutely mind-boggling.  He's a true historian and a wonderful resource for all of us.  John Spear takes care of our many buildings and grounds and does a lot more to keep us operating.  He came the same year as Pete in 1975.  Celeste Philbrick Barr who joined us in 1997, wears many hats including Director of Education.  Teacher extraordinary, she's so very involved in all the tasks of education and public relations, a very large part of our mission.  These three have set the mood and built the foundation on which the rest of us on the staff operate.  They have created and helped build a family atmosphere that radiates to all the eager, bright volunteers and part time educators who keep Beaver Brook interesting, vibrant and activity-based on a day-to-day basis.

So Leave Room for Nature - come and visit us and keep coming back, bring the kids, bring the old folks.  We have plenty of room, 30 miles of well kept trails and lots to see.

Thank you for honoring us !                                   ---Fred Lyford, Executive Director
