Beaver Brook Association News June 2010 |
|
Dear Friend of Beaver Brook,
Green exercise may be good for your head. A new study finds that surprisingly small doses of outdoor activity boost mood and overall well-being. Have
you had a bad day at work? If so, going for a long walk in the park
will almost certainly help you de-stress. But it turns out that even
small doses of outdoor exercise can have remarkable effects on mental
health, report Jules Pretty and Jo Barton of the University of Essex
(U.K.) in this issue of ES&T (Environ. Sci. Technol.). In an analysis of 10 studies, they found that getting outside and
moving for as little as five minutes at a time improved both mood and
self-esteem. Exercise near a body of water had the biggest effect. Click here to read more....Green Exercise
A good way to start de-stressing this season is to attend the
Summer Solstice Celebration Saturday June 19 at Beaver Brook's Maple Hill Farm
There will be a guided hike of the upgraded Big Tree Trail from 4-5 pm. This was a recent project of John Plummer, Eagle Scout from Hollis. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket or chairs to lounge in the gardens and listen to live celtic jigs, aires and reels plus French-Canadian and American Old Timey music by the Rakes of Milford Area from 6-8 pm. These musicians play banjo, guitar, dulcimer, bass, fiddle, bodhran, and mandolin and sundry other instruments. You might want to dance or bring and instrument to join in. There will be old fashioned 'unplugged' games for children. And a potluck dessert buffet. If you bring a dessert, you will receive 2 tickets to the 'Taste of Summer' Dessert buffet. Otherwise tickets to the buffet are $2 per person. A prize will be awarded to the best summery dessert.
