Designs of Nature
29th Annual Art Show and Fall Festival
October 3rd & 4th, 2009
12-5 pm

This festival is held at a scenic old farm and nature center and features a nature-themed art and photography show in a beautiful barn.  In addition there are live music performances, live animal presentations, a farmer's market, a children's story book reading by the author, animal puppet show, sculptures on loan from the Andres Institute,  apple cider-pressing, craft-making for children, and a self-guided  "Story-walk" on one of our trails.  Food, baked goods, dried flowers and flower arrangements available for sale.  The 12 theme gardens and 30 miles of trails are open to the public as always dawn to dusk.
The Art and Photography Show is also open for viewing September 26 & 27 12-5 pm.

Schedule of Events    Saturday October 3rd
 
12:00 -- 5:00 pm        "Designs of Nature" Art Show in the Maple Hill Barn. 

12:00 -- 5:00 pm        Self-guided "Storywalk".  The pages of a book are transformed into signs that are laid out on a trail inviting families, children, teachers and others to follow the path of pages.  This storywalk will tell the story of  Scoot!   It encourages literacy and health movement.

12-00 -- 2:30  pm      Fiddling by Tina and Sierra Landis in the Children's loft. 20 min. sets.

1:00 --  1:45 pm        Live Birds of Prey Presentation by Wingmasters in the Maple Hill Gardens.

2:00 - 3:00 pm          Storybook reading and signing with Cathryn Falwell, author of Scoot! And Turtle Splash.  Books available for purchase.  Maple Hill Garden (Children's loft if inclement weather).

2:00 -- 3:00 pm        Presentation on Asian Long-horned Beetle followed by Q&A by Jon Nute and Margaret Hagen, UNH Hillsborough County Cooperative Extension.  Maple Hill Barn, Lower Level.

3:00 - 3:45 pm        Live Birds of Prey Presentation by Wingmasters in the Maple Hill Gardens.

3:45 - 5:00 pm        Kip Ferguson- Singer/songwriter of traditional songs from Scotland and also contemporary folk music Maple Hill Barn

12:00 - 2:00 pm      Rock Splitting Demo by Andres Institute of Art (Maple Hill Barn Lower Level)

1:00 - 2:00 pm        "The Harmonica Saints" 12 musicians that will make people laugh and encourage a sing-a-long.

2:00 - 4:00 pm        The Grumbling Rustics, Steve Jones and Tim Mowry play old time and Celtic music on clawhammer banjo, guitars, mandolin and bouzouki.

3:00 - 3: 25 pm        "Getting Ready for Winter" animal puppet show by BBA educators  Maple Hill Garden (Children's Loft if inclement weather).  This is a premiere of a program being offered to PreK-1st grade classes starting this fall!

Live Birds of Prey Presentation by Wingmasters

WINGMASTERS is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed raptor rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors, and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994 WINGMASTERS has presented over 5000 programs at schools, libraries and museums throughout New England.
 
Forest  Insect Threats:  the Asian Long-horned Beetle

Jon Nute and Margaret Hagen,  Extension Educators with the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, will give a slide show on Asian Long-horned beetle, a invasive species that threatens northeast forests.  This will be of interest to forest landowners in particular.  Following the speakers, there will be a question and answer session, and time to speak informally with the presenters and local foresters.

Hike amidst the 50 sculptures and learn about the landscape and the
interpretation of the sculptures.  A BBA Guide and an Andres guide will lead you through a selection of sculpture trails.
 
You are also welcome to attend the opening reception of the Andres Institute's 2009 Annual International Sculpture Symposium entitled "Cornerstones"

1 Main Street Brookline NH.  Meet this year's artists, the founders of Andres Institute and enjoy refreshments.
 
Three sculptures will be on loan from the Andres Institute in the Maple Hill Gardens during the month of September.
 
The Mission of the Andres Institute is to serve and advance the intellectual and social well being of the public by educating and training artists, by promoting the integration of art and technology, and by supporting fine arts.
