Director's Update
| Judy Newman Museum Director |
We are ready to host the
Annual Hood River Fly In!
Airplanes start arriving Friday and the outside display area will be open to the visiting public starting Saturday AM.
We will be celebrating our 5th Birthday on Saturday at the Fly-In. In the last five years WAAAM has grown into quite an attraction bringing in nearly 30,000 visitors a year.
Visitors have come from all 50 states and more than 60 countries! We have 9500 hits per month on our web site and the iPhone App has been downloaded by people in 75 different countries.
WAAAM currently has 89 aircraft in the collection. Just 3 weeks ago that 89th plane arrived. If you follow us on Facebook you already know about this little buggy . It is a 1928 Velie Monocoupe Model 70 sporting a 55 hp radial engine, enclosed cockpit with side by side seating. The Monocoupe was flown here from California by volunteer Chief Pilot Ben Davidson. Come for Fly-In and talk with Ben about that trip
When you see Don Mayo, Ty Ross, Ted Millar and John Cheney around please give them a big thank you. They donated the funds for the purchase of this historic aircraft. Thank you! We love this bird.
Charles Lindbergh once owned a Velie Monocoupe. He is said to have donated it to the St Louis Terminal as" it had a tenancy to ground loop". Our Monocoupe was a 19 yr restoration and comes to WAAAM just out of that restoration by Wayne Mikel of California. There were about 350 built. Ads from the time refer to it a the first plane built for private fliers. W.L Velie was the grand son of John Deere (yep the tractor man) Learn more here
The Madras Airshow of the Cascades awarded the 1932 UBF from WAAAM First Place in the Antique Aircraft category. Volunteers Steve Tolson and Lee Borchers spent the weekend in Madras sharing the UBF and the '31 Chevrolet with airshow visitors and talking of WAAAM.
Thanks to the super volunteer instructors Gene Wright and Andy Anderson that made this years three Model T Driving School classes such a success. Gene said of the August class " the ladies sure did a great job and were so enthusiastic" . Watch the news letter for class dates in 2013. ( June, July and August)
Please put the 1st Ever WAAAM Traffic Jam on your calendar. If you love cars... you will love this show. Join us it making the first one great!
Thank you to all who believe in the spirit of WAAAM and for your donations and support and in helping spread the word.
Clear skies to you all and see you at the Fly In,
Judy Newman
