Jim's Tool Box
Roadmap to Renewal: A Resource for Your Congregation's Strategic Journey
This month Jim reviews Douglas Ruffles's book Roadmap to Renewal: Rediscovering the Church's Mission. Jim sees this book as more of a "Strategic Planning 101." It is a book that many smaller to medium size congregations can get their arms and heads around for a strategic planning process. Ruffles' approach is more accessible than some of the other strategic planning resources especially for smaller to mid-size churches (50 to 150 in worship). Larger congregations could also benefit from the book and the process laid out in it, especially if it has been awhile since they have done any strategic planning.

Plans for the Charge/Church Conferences for this Fall
District Superintendent Barb Sholis has announced a new twist for the charge/church conference schedule for the congregations of the Capitol Area South (CAS) District.
Barb has announced:
I have decided to employ a pattern that will allow either the district superintendent or the assistant to the superintendent to conduct individual church conferences in every church/charge at least once during my tenure as superintendent. This year my focus is primariily on the congregations in Franklin County along with a few congregations outside of the county. The pastors of the churches that will be having individual charge conferences have received a schedule for the charge conferences.
Again this year, congregations/charges in Licking,Fairfield, Pickaway, and Madison Counties (with a few exceptions) will conduct their own charge conferences (only members of the Church Council have a vote) or church conferences (all members of the congregation have a vote) in the local churches. After consulting with local church leaders, each pastor will set a date for the meeting. The pastor will then invite an ordained elder (active or retired) to preside at the business session. After the arrangements for the conference are set, the pastor will submit the details about the meeting including the date of the conference and the presiding elder to the district office via an online form or hard copy.
Please plan to schedule the charge/church conference in a two month window from October 1 to November 30 for the completion of the charge conferences. Pastors are expected to mail in the completed charge conference packets to the district office within one week of the charge conference gathering.

This is a "bye" week for OSU, so come and get the "nuts & bolts" of programming successful outreaches. Come and discover a way to change your part of the world, transforming it in Jesus' name. There will be 3 break-out sessions to choose from, after you hear an overview of these and other ministries.
The Rev. Bob Alexander, will be our key speaker, helping us move forward in hands-on ministry, helping us see the needs of the community. Other exceptional Missional Outreaches you will hear from are:

Water's Edge Ministry has now developed into a multi-ministry endeavor with after-school and family programs for a poverty-stricken area of Buckeye Lake. It is overseen by the Jacksontown UMC.
Centerburg UMC birthed 'H2O' - store front worship center that pipes in, not the worship service from the Centerburg church, but from a national site that offers top quality worship and message.
Galena UMC is a restart of an old church in a new building. They offer community programs of weekly worship & fellowship in a trailer park, and weekly children's programs that have an Arts Camp, ending with an art show.
Life Well is on the south side of Zanesville. It also works with troubled teen, making a kingdom difference in their lives. It is part of a two-point charge. Crooksville is reaching out with touches, letting their community know God's love.
McArthur UMC has an extensive list of ministries for all age groups in their exceptional outreaches. They are making a life-changing - Jesus changes in the lives of people in their area.
