One Day to End Homelessness Campaign 1/1/-2/29/12
The One Day to End Homelessness campaign, from January 1 through February 29, 2012, calls on community members to contribute the equivalent of just one day's rent or mortgage payment. Money raised will benefit the programs of the Community Shelter Board, the nationally recognized organization that funds housing and homelessness services in Franklin County. The campaign will include activities that raise money and raise awareness among our congregations about homelessness. To facilitate communications, the Community Shelter Board provides participating organizations with a comprehensive Campaign Toolkit with fact sheets, bulletin copy, and other support. WBNS-10TV will hold a telethon during all TV news programming on January 31, 2012, to bolster our efforts. Click HERE to download a copy of the memo that has been send to each congregation in the CAS District about this campaign.

Jim's Tool Box
Pastors on Facebook:
What Do You Share? (Part 2)
In this month's Tool Box, Jim continues with a series on the use of social media by pastors and other church staff. He shares some guidelines and suggestions for the appropriate use of Facebook and other social media by pastors and church staff members . Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are new areas of communication/relationship in our culture today so the "rules" about the use of the ways of communicating are still evolving. Check out Jim's article to see why he found out about this emerging ministry tool.

News from United Methodist Community Ministries

You can Give One Day to End Homelessness
(Editor's note: The Rev. Beth Weisbrod recently volunteered at the Women's Overflow Shelter here is a story about a family she met and their housing dilemma.)
Tina is a 26 year old young woman with a husband and 2 kids. If you passed her on the street you wouldn't know she is currently homeless. She and her family recently moved to Columbus from California and are struggling to find jobs and housing. For now her husband is staying at the Men's Overflow Shelter, she is staying at the Women's Overflow Shelter at St. Stephen's Community Center, and her kids are staying with family.
When I volunteered there she said, "Please don't call me homeless- this is just temporary til we can get into our own place". This is the face of homelessness today- it's not just about the chronically homeless person pushing a shopping cart.
More than ever there is a need to do what we can to help. Remember to give one day of your rent or mortgage on Jan 31 to the One Day to End Homelessness Campaign on Channel 10. Mention your church when you call in your pledge.
In the meantime, thanks to King Ave, Oakland Park and New Life UM churches for volunteering at the Women's Overflow shelter the last couple of weeks! One more request- if your church has a van, would you consider an early Sunday morning run from St Stephen's to New LIfe UMC for breakfast? There are about 22 women staying at the shelter and there is no bus for an hour when they leave the shelter at 6am. Let me know if you can assist in this way- you can call me at 614-228-1010. Thanks!

Methodist Theological School Announces 2012 MIssion and Evangelism Institute for March 19-20
This year's Mission and Evangelism Institute seeks to present the church's identity and calling as "missional." With the theme "Missional Church in Many Contexts," it offers pathways toward becoming a missional congregation in rural, suburban and urban settings. The three institute speakers are proven missional leaders who have had breakthroughs in transforming congregations from inward-oriented to mission-focused.
Two of the speakers at this year's event are pastors in the CAS District:
The Rev. Kevin Koske: Kevin is the pastor of Church in the Mall in Heath. An outreach ministry of Centenary UMC in Granville, Church in the Mall aspires to become a fully chartered United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Bill Lyle: Bill is the senior pastor at Peace UMC, Pickerington. Bill was just appointed at Peace after having served as the lead pastor at Greenville Evangelical UMC where he led the church in growing from a church attendance of 126 to 770. He reinvigorated a defunct Sunday school. The church initiated three new styles of worship, utilizing innovative multimedia and integrated multi-site ministry.
The other leader is the Rev. David Hood who is the campus pastor at Fort McKinley Church, the urban branch of Ginghamsburg Church in Dayton. Fort McKinley is a church "restart" that was on the brink of closing in 2008. In just three years, it has grown from 40 attendees to 400, with three Sunday morning worship celebrations.

Confirmation Retreat Scheduled for March 2-4
Learning and growing in our faith, in our relationship with God, is a life-long endeavor. As United Methodist's we share a common history, but we each have our own story as to how we came to this point in our journey and we each will live our call to discipleship differently. Our Story: Confirmation Retreat is an enhancement of your church's current confirmation program and will provide students an opportunity to explore their own faith journey while learning the history of the United Methodist Church. This 3-day retreat is geared at 6th-9th graders but high school students engaged in a confirmation process are also welcome. Students will be immersed in God's creation while connecting with United Methodist traditions, each other and their own personal relationship with Christ. It is our dream that by learning the "United Methodist story" each participant will continue to grow in faith and explore opportunities to serve God as they move toward the next chapter of life. Join us as we discover our faith in the intersection between our past traditions and our life long discipleship. The registration deadline is February 20. (Please note this event will fill us quickly). Click HERE for more information.

Prayer Concerns
Our prayers are with the family of Ruby Molyneux. Ruby died on December 6, 2011. She was the widow of the Rev. Donald Molyneux.
We remember in prayer the family of the Rev. Erladean Heffner. Erladean served as the pastor for 47 years at Hopewell Church. She served for many years in the former Newark District before Hopewell Church was located in what is now the Foothills District.
We pray for Issac infant son of the Jennifer and the Rev. Jon Osmundson. Issac is undergoing tests at Children's Nationwide Hospital.
