Have You Checked the Cribs in Your Church's Nursery?
In order to comply with new safety regulations taking effect in June, churches need to replace their nursery cribs, which could already pose a danger to children and leave churches open to liability lawsuits.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission unanimously approved sweeping new safety rules, which outlaw drop-side cribs and require stronger hardware and supports. The commission said it is unlikely that existing cribs will meet the new standards.

the Connectional Ministries Council of the West Ohio Conference (WOC) presented her priorities for her work in the WOC as a teaching at the district conference. She stressed three important areas of her work: 1. Developing material around a sense of call that will help all believers, but especially young persons and youth adults, consider the meaning of call in their lives. 2. Implementing Leadership training through programs such as "The Crucible" which is a new leadership development program open to clergy of the WOC. 3. Aligning the funding process of the WOC to assure that congregations and ministries that receive mission funds from the WOC will be effective and accountable in the ministries that they seek to carry out.
Dr. Hank Stringer conducted the annual business meeting that included the adoption of the 2012 district budget (the 2012 budget holds the line on the amount apportioned to churches), the election of officers for district committees, and the recognition of pastors who who are being commissioned or ordained and those who are retiring. Pastors who are retiring include: The Rev. Maxine Smith Pierce, the Rev. Jack Witherspoon, and Dr. Hank Stringer.
As the conference closed, Assistant to the Superintendent Jim Waugh invited those present to show their appreciation for the leadership that Hank Stringer has offered to the Columbus South/Capitol Area South District over the last seven years. Hank then asked that the congregation sing "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," and Hank then led the group in a prayer of dismissal.

Jim's Tool Box
Dealing with Resistance: How Do You Handle Things When Everyone Doesn't Agree?
For many church leaders it is the situation that they dread. The leader in charge of a group encounters angry words, conflict between members, disagreement with the presentation of the group leader (to name a few). The conscious or unconscious process of slowing or blocking a group from making progress or a topic or issue is called "resistance."
Last month I shared tools that Thomas Hawkins discussed in his book The Christian Small-Group Leader (the book was the text in the advanced lay speaking class) in ways that a group leader can facilitate good listening skills in a small group. This month I am borrowing from the last chapter of Hawkins book to discuss ways that a group leader can deal with resistance.

Chautaqua Celebration Returns to Wesley Ridge Retirement During June 12-15
Chautauqua returns to Wesley Ridge Retirement Community on June 12 through June 15. The name "Chautauqua" is borrowed from the movement in the late 1800's that brought folks from the big cities to a "campground setting" for respite from the summer heat and for some "culture" that included worship, learning, recreation and entertainment. Wesley Ridge has created an event that includes daily: exercise, Bible study, lectures, recreation and a movie with discussion following. The week will begin on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. with worship outside in the white tent, and each evening at 7:00 p.m. a special group will entertain. Special guests during the day will present Bible study and lectures. Speakers include: the Rev. Daniel R. Hieschman, D. Min., Executive Director National Association of Episcopal Schools, the Rev. E. Cary Simonton, Pastor of Bexley United Methodist Church; Benjamin J. Marrison, Editor of the The Columbus Dispatch Robert Wilcher; Executive Director of Kentucky Head Start Association, Thomas Rieland; General Manager WOSU Public Media, Sarah Hanka and Erin McAllister Newman from The Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow; and Chris Bradley, Doppler 10 Chief Meteorologist, 10 WBNS TV. To learn more about the Chautauqua events call (614) 759-0023. Wesley Ridge Retirement Community is located at 2225 Taylor Park Drive in Reynoldsburg.
