Mission and Vision of the CAS District
Our Mission:
The Mission of the Capitol Area South District is to encourage and equip United Methodist congregations in their mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our Vision
The vision of the Capitol Area South District is that all local churches are to be disciple-making centers that mirror the demographic composition of the community in which they are located in terms of age, ethnicity, and cultural background; and that the congregations continually grow and reach new people for Christ and strive to be open and inclusive of all God's children.

Christmas Greetings from the CAS Staff
Shepherds

The Work of Christmas
by Howard Thurman
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers (and sisters),
To make music in the heart.

Blessings on you during the seasons
of Advent and Christmas!
May you do the work of Christmas
during the coming  year!

A Review of A Door Set Open
Peter Steinke is best known for his work in applying the family systems theorA Door Set Openy of Dr. Edward Friedman to congregational life.  In his latest book A Door Set Open, Steinke takes on the challenge of addressing the major cultural shifts that have affected the church in the last thirty years.

Steinke reminds leaders in the church about the importance of hope and the recovery of mission as congregations navigate these turbulent times.

Volunteers Needed at the Charitable Pharmacy

charitable pharmacy logoThe Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio is a ministry of the West Ohio Conference that provides free medications to those who cannot afford them. Open since Feb. 26, 2010, the Pharmacy has served more than 825 patients and dispensed more than 9,500 prescriptions valued at over $743,000.

In order to continue this vital ministry, we need the help of individuals like you! Volunteers are needed to serve as greeters who welcome patients to the Pharmacy each day, and for those with a medical background, help is needed in sorting donated medications.

The Charitable Pharmacy is located inside Livingston United Methodist Church at 200 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus. For more information, please email charitablepharmacy@gmail.com, call 614-227-0301, or visit www.charitablepharmacy.org.

Congregations Seek to Host Freedom Schools

This month the Rev. Beth Weisbrod features the effort to launch Freedom Schools in congregations across central Ohio and the West Ohio Conference during the summer of 2011.

Eight UM churches will host the 2011 Freedom School, a six week, all day, free, summer program focused on improving reading skills and youth  leadership development and generating positive attitudes toward learning.

Human Trafficking Awareness Sunday Set for 1/9/11
Did you know that 1,000 American-born children and 800 immigrantshuman trafficking are forced into the sex trade in Ohio each year? And around the world, more than 27 million people live and work in slavery today, more than in the entire history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade? In2010, the West Ohio Annual Conference adopted a resolution calling for the abolition of modern-day slavery in all forms.

The new Conference Human Trafficking web page
(www.westohioumc.org/slavery) provides the resolution in its entirety with action steps for local congregations.

One of those action steps is what we now ask of you: that every congregation in the West Ohio Conference set aside the second Sunday in January as Human Trafficking Awareness Sunday. Worship resources, including links to liturgy and prayers, along with a bulletin insert (attached) have been made available for your use on
Sunday, January 9, 2011. This is a critical first step to creating awareness and promoting advocacy for the abolition of human trafficking.

Prayer Concerns
Prayer ConcernsThe Rev. Nancy Draves had arthroscopic surgery on her knee recently.

The Rev. Earl Bishop (retired) had surgery to remove a tumor in his tongue.  He is recovering at home.

Our thoughts are with the Rev. Tom McGranor (retired) and his family in the death of his wife Barbara.  Barbara had served as an officer in the conference United Methodist Women.  She also served on the Board of Church and Society and the Parsonage Standards Committee.
