Capitol Area South Mission and Vision:
Festival of Sharing 09
Our Mission:
The Mission of the Capitol Area South District is to encourage and equip United Methodist congregations in their mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our Vision:
The vision of the Capitol Area South District is that all local churches are to be disciple-making centers that mirror the demographic composition of the community in which they are located in terms of age, ethnicity, and cultural background; and that the congregations continually grow and reach new people for Christ and strive to be open and inclusive of all God's children.

CAS District Strategic Plan Updated

strategic planningDr. Hank Stringer announces the revised Capitol Area South District Strategic Plan. Hank compares the Strategic Plan to a car's GPS (Global Positioning System.)

He writes, "I see a parallel purpose between the GPS and an organization's strategic plan.  While the former is technology based and the latter is people oriented, both are focused on giving directions for future outcomes.  The following strategic plan was developed by our district Leadership and Visioning Team.  You may want to think of it as the GPS for our district.  It is intended to provide directional information for the mission and ministries of the CAS district for the next two years."

Jim's Tool Box
Festival of Sharing 09Mainline Churches Can Grow

In the last two Tool Box articles, I have been discussing the life cycle of congregations.  Among the many emails that I recieve is the The Columbia Partnership eNews.  An article by consultant the Rev. Dick Hamm "Mainline Churches Can Grow" caught my eye.  In his article Ed wrote, "Recent research suggests that an astounding 70-80 percent of mainline churches are in the lasdt quadrant of the congregational life cycle!"  He continued, "The fact is that there are congregations of all kinds that are growing; including those in the mainline.  There are growing congregations that are theologically conservative, moderate, and progressive."

Dick goes on to list the characteristics of these growing churches.  I felt this article would be a good follow up to my last two articles so I wrote to Dick and ask his permission to use his article in the Tool Box this month.

Small-membership and rural congregations are facing unique challenges due to population shifts and economic changes. As many of them and their clergy often feel ignored and neglected, there is an urgent need for transformative leadership, as well as creative and integral approaches to mission and evangelism. Dr. Anthony Pappas (author of Entering the World of the Small Church) and Dr. Robin Knowles Wallace (MTSO faculty and author of Worshiping in the Small Membership Church) will offer seminars around the theme of "Missional Renewal of the Small-Membership Church." For more information, please visit http://www.mtso.edu/Events/MEI.htm or contact Dr. Joon-Sik Park at jpark@mtso.edu or 740-362-3367.

S.O.W.E.R. Update: Changes for This Summer

The poor economy has reared it's ugly head for the SOWER house build as donations were insufficient to commit to a house.  We do have enough funds to commit to a room addition or similar project.   In order to accommodate requests for the first and second weeks in August and still keep the work weeks compact the work week schedule been modified to August 8-14, August 15-21, August 29-Sept 3, Sept 12-18.  Some spaces are still available in all weeks - please call for particulars.

Is Your Church's Wireless Mic Legal?
Come June 2010, wireless mics will have to abandon the popular 700MHz band, where many have been squatting without authorization.  Do you know the frequency of the wireless mic(s) at your church?  In June, no mics will be able to use the popular 700 MHz band.
