Crescendo Inc. Good to Knows!

March 2012

Greetings!

Frequently, I discover books, websites, training workshops, blogs, people etc...  that I think are worth sharing with clients, colleagues, friends and family. I refer to these 'discoveries' as Crescendo Inc. Good to Knows!

Since the beginning of 2012, I have discovered some wonderful things to share and I encourage you to explore the following Crescendo Inc. Good to Knows!

Teresa Amabile is Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. She researches what makes people creative, productive, happy, and motivated at work.   You can watch her presentation on TEDx - Atlanta (September 2011) and/or listen to her interview with Dan Pink on Office Hours(August 2011). Her work is incredibly powerful!

ProgressPrinciple What really sets the best managers above the rest? It's their power to build a cadre of employees who have great inner work lives-consistently positive emotions; strong motivation; and favorable perceptions of the organization, their work, and their colleagues. The worst managers undermine inner work life, often unwittingly.

As Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer explain in The Progress Principle, seemingly mundane workday events can make or break employees' inner work lives. But it's forward momentum in meaningful work-progress-that creates the best inner work lives. Through rigorous analysis of nearly 12,000 diary entries provided by 238 employees in 7 companies, the authors explain how managers can foster progress and enhance inner work life every day.

The book shows how to remove obstacles to progress, including meaningless tasks and toxic relationships. It also explains how to activate two forces that enable progress: (1) catalysts-events that directly facilitate project work, such as clear goals and autonomy-and (2) nourishers-interpersonal events that uplift workers, including encouragement and demonstrations of respect and collegiality.

I LStealLikeAnArtist OVE this book! I read Steal like an Artist in 3 hours and found it incredibly inspirational! It is perfect for jump starting creativity. Enjoy!

You don't need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That's the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side.

When Austin Kleon was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. The talk went viral, and its author dug deeper into his own ideas to create Steal Like an Artist, the book. The result is inspiring, hip, original, practical, and entertaining. Read more...
