In search of... EQ in Action!

Lisa Griebel Photo

Fifteen minutes after I started washing my cranberry stained clothes (because of the juice I had just spilled), it occurred to me that my cell phone was missing. I did what we all do in situations like this and tried to remember the last time I had used it.

Fast forward to the instant I knew that at the same time the cranberry stain was being removed from my clothes...so was everything stored on my cell phone.

While you may never have 'laundered' your cell phone (not recommend), you have likely experienced what led up to this unfortunate and costly mistake.

Thinking back, the signs were clear - I was experiencing what Daniel Goleman refers to as an emotional hijack. When the emotional brain hijacks the thinking brain it is impossible to think clearly.

The good news is that I am aware of the physical signs. The bad news is that I wasn't paying attention. For me, a racing heart and pounding head signals trouble is lurking. I must consciously stop what I am doing, take a deep breath and focus on something positive.

What are your physical signs of an emotional hijack and what do you do to get back on track?

Self-awareness is our most emotional competence. Unless we are aware of and understand how, why and what we are feeling, we will miss opportunities to tap the innate wisdom of our emotions.

Greetings!

"Chance favors the prepared mind."
This Louis Pasteur quote comes back to me every time I start to wonder, "now what?" Consistently, my answer has been to dig in and get ready for what's next. At the moment, this means that I am consciously carving out time during the work week to focus on personal growth and development.

After reading Now, Discover your Strengths several years ago, I remember thinking what a radical idea it was to focus on leveraging strengths vs. developing weaknesses. Of course, now it seems like the 'big duh' especially when I think how much time and money my boss spent trying to improve my financial analysis skills - NEVER going to happen!

Crescendo Inc. is sponsoring a 1-day workshop, Working with Strengths, on Thursday, June 25th from 9:00 - 4:30 p.m. (see details below).

The purpose of the workshop is to help you clarify your personal strengths through a structured storytelling process called the Dependable Strengths Articulation Process.

My friend and colleague, Patty Bales, (Career Development Consultant) will be facilitating this session. Please join me for a day of exploration and insight.

Warmly,
Lisa

orking with Strengths
If you feel uncertain or awkward naming your strengths, want to use your strengths more often, are in transition or are considering a career shift, this workshop is a great place to start.
Research has proven that we make our greatest contributions and have the highest level of satisfaction and energy when we use the strengths we have used repeatedly (perhaps unnoticed) throughout our lives.

The Working with Strengths day-long workshop provides a structured process for you to reflect on and share peak experiences from all aspects of your life. You will receive feedback from others, clarify your key strengths in your own words, and summarize their use and impact for networking purposes.

This process is not an assessment or a list of characteristics or factors from a pre-determined list.  It is an opportunity to experience the Dependable Strengths Articulation Process from the Center for Dependable Strengths, University of Washington, Seattle.

When: Thursday, June 26, 2009, 9:00-4:30 (Registration deadline: Friday, June 12.)
Where: Bloomington, MN
Investment: $119.00 (includes snacks & lunch)
For More information or to register, please contact Patty Bales.

Note: This workshop is limited to 25 participants, so be sure to register early.

EQ-i Certification Training

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a critical competence for personal and professional success. Help your clients lead a more successful and satisfying life by developing their EQ.

The EQ-i (Emotional Quotient Inventory) is the first validated assessment to measure emotional/social functioning. It is being used by coaches and consultants worldwide to support life/work coaching and mentoring, organization, leadership and team development.

Certification training will teach you what you need to know to successfully administer the EQ-i. The session is designed to provide hands-on practice to help you internalize and strengthen your skill at analyzing, interpreting and debriefing the EQ-i.

At the end of EQ-i Certification, you will understand the Bar On model and concepts of emotional intelligence as well as the science behind the instrument.
Note: This program has been approved by the Minnesota Board of Psychology for 21 Continuing Education Hours.

2009 EQ-i Certification Training Dates
  • June 17-19 (registration deadline: May 22)
  • Sep 16-18 (registration deadline: Aug 23)
  • Dec 1-3 (registration deadline: Nov 13)
Note: Classes are limited to 15 participants, so be sure to register early.

Here are a few of my current favorites:

Go Put your Stregths to workGo Put Your Strengths to Work: 6 Powerful Steps to Achieve Outstanding Performance
by Marcus Buckingham (Author)
Of all the books that Buckingham has written, I always come back to this one. It's an easy read and a practical reminder of what makes me feel strong vs. drained.

"Research data show that most people do not come close to making full use of their assets at work -- in fact, only 17 percent of the workforce believe they use all of their strengths on the job. Go Put Your Strengths to Work aims to change that through a six-step, six-week experience that will reveal the hidden dimensions of your strengths.

With structured exercises that will become part of your regular workweek and proven tactics from people who have successfully applied the book's lessons, Go Put Your Strengths to Work will arm you with a radically different approach to your work life"... read more

I LOVE this DVD set. It is a brilliant short film series that brings  Go Put your Strengths to Work alive. I appreciate his ability to creatively demonstrate the strengths messages. This would be a great addition to a small group career development discussion.

"Trombone Player Wanted is a companion film series to Marcus Buckingham's book, Go put your Strengths to Work. The short films (six in the series and approximately 15 minutes in length) communicate in a way that motivates personal and team performance.

Trombone Player Wanted provides powerful lessons for managers and employees striving to be more productive and more focused today than they were yesterday"...read more

Recent Testimonials

"I was originally certified to use the EQ-i 5 years ago and frequently use it in my consulting practice. Every time I administer the EQ-i, I am reminded how robust the instrument is and how much more there is to learn. Periodically, I seek Lisa's guidance on more challenging EQ-i interpretations. Last year, I decided to attend one of her EQ-i training sessions as a refresh and I am glad that I did. Even though I am EQ-i certified and use it regularly, I learned more than I thought I would.

Lisa is a skilled trainer who has developed and delivers a first-rate learning experience.  Her knowledge and skill using the EQ-i coupled with her attention to details is a clear benefit for all participants. This is evident in the quality and practicality of the materials she has developed and generously shares. She has a relaxed training style that encourages participation and learning.
I went into the Refresh training hoping to learn more about the competencies and left with that along with invaluable tools I have been using ever since.

I am happy to recommend Lisa's EQ-i training program for first-time certification or a refresh. It was a good investment at a good time."
